I'm compiling a list of batches that contain certain screens. This will help identify which screen you have before opening the box and also may tell us whether the one of the two types of screen will be consistently used in the future.
To find your screen specifications (thanks jeremyp111):
Start>Control Panel
Click System & Maintenance
Click System
Click Device Manager on upper left
Double Click Monitors
Double Click Generic PnP Monitor
Click Details Tab
Select Hardware IDs from the drop down box
It will say MONITOR\xxxxxx where xxxxxx is the monitor type. It will begin with AUO or LG.

Please post your screen type and batch number here (If you have it, the production date also)
Conclusions so far:
Same batch likely means same type of monitor. This has been checked only once, needs verification.
Sequential batch numbers do not mean same monitor. Note: H366486 is AUO while H366487 is LG.
H and I batches both contain LG and AUO screens.
If you're really concerned about what screen you get, I suggest asking to open the computer and check. You can always use the "specifications may change without notice" label on the box as an excuse. You shouldn't need to do this if the display is the same batch as the stock boxes (that's my guess anyways, 95% sure).
Keep the numbers coming. This may prove helpful to a few here and there. You also may want to post the location and if they have any left of the type you bought. Just in case someone is in your area and wants to score.

If I have generic driver, how do i tell make of screen/
Thanks -
it'll say generic, but if you go to the advanced stuff, look for something that says "hardware ID" in a dropdown menu. It'll tell you there

I have finally decided to open my 7505 and it is an LG, beatiful screen !!!
My batch is 356761.
I will definitely be keeping this one !
So my 7811 refurb is for sale, PM me with an offer if interested.
DK -
So far all of the early batches are LG. My bet is those were supposed to be display and then they sell us all the AUO.
I might be interested in that 7811. I'll pm you. -
Just picked up my new 7505u and it has an LGD3901 with 1920x1200.
Batch number H366463; date of manufacture 11/18/2008 -
oh ho! it might just be random!
-
AUO, Batch: H365012. Pisses me off because the display model was a LG
-
Mine came with an AUO screen and I'm pretty happy with it. It looks fantastic and I wouldn't have given it a second thought if I hadn't read the posts on it here in the forum. Hey, be happy you got such a smokin' deal on that thing!
-
Im going over to Best Buy later today to check this thing out, this just might be to good of a deal to pass up.

LG screen purchased 12/27/08

MFGR 11/19/08 -
H366486
AUO 1088 1920x1200 screen
(best buy's store demo, they were setting it up when I walked in this morning) I bought one and it's the same batch but I haven't fired it up yet, need to sell my old laptop first.) -
Where exactly do you find the Batch Number and Date of Mfg?
-
The batch number is on a sticker on the outside of the box.
-
The sticker on my box says IOO2509.
But...how can I tell which display I have?I'm a technical idiot, so I need it explained to me like I'm 2 years old.

Hope this is 'small child' enough for ya! LOL -
So, I have IOO2509 and LGD3901. That means I have one of the better (WUXGA) displays, right?
Either way, this thing is so sharp...it's WAY beyond my recently deceased laptop. -
Yes, you have one of the LG displays which, in the past, has been a better display. However, even the AUO displays in the 7805u have been pretty good so far.
To check for WUXGA vs WXGA, go to your desktop, right click in an open area and select NVDIA Control Panel. Under display resolution, slide the slider all the way to the right. WUXGA displays will show 1920x1200.
This certainly is a super badass laptop for the money. Enjoy!

Actually, I don't game at all, so this laptop is probably overkill for me. But, compared to what I was seeing on Dell, HP, Sony, etc for a 17" model, the price was excellent. At least it'll be future-proof for awhile. And I'm sure it will handle photo editing and video editing easily.
Now, my only problem will be keeping my 19 year old son off it, lol. Until I get somewhat tired of it, this lappy is all MINE and I don't want to share. -
FWIW my H366486 batch is also 1920x1200 AUO-1088 like the store display I posted about earlier.

Time to play! -
Anyone know why Newegg sells a p-7801u (which seems to be a p-7805u except with only a 320B 5400RPM drive) for $1599???
Even gateway.com shows the p-7801u as $1699 list, but it's the same specs as the p-7805u (except for the hdd).
What is the extra $550 for??? -
Batch: H356761
LCD: LGD3901
Yea!!! -
It's just our bonus that someone screwed up and gave us the good monitors for CHEAP. -
even the 7811 had the 1440x900 stickers on it. I think it's not that they screwed up, but they're too cheap to print more stickers.
-
-
Because the 7801 was sold online only and massively overpriced? I don't know, what's your point?
Keep the batch numbers coming. -
Kamin_Majere =][= Ordo Hereticus
the 6860 sold for 1250 and the 172 high end machine sold for 3000 at one point. For that you got a t8300 and a 1920x1200 screen... not that impressive for that much more.
Gateway has always had oddball prices, and somehow it works for them.
Their FX line has dominated the budget gaming line up since it came out due to their price vs the power the machines give you.
The 7805 is a great deal no matter if its 1050, 1149 or 1299. Its all a really good price for the rig.
I'm hoping their core 7 rigs keep the same price (cant wait till i get that one with the extreme nehelam mobile quad)

Batch: H357776
LCD: AUO
Went to Bestbuy a few days ago to pick up a mouse, saw the 7805u on display, checked it out, it had a LG, didn't see any discernible difference between that one and my laptop...both didn't have dead pixels, both seem to have minimal light bleeding coming from the bottom, both look great.
But I think the only way to see if there are differences is to do a side by side comparison... -
I just finally bought one of these myself,
Batch H366487
Screen: LG
This is at the steelyard commons location in cleveland, ohio. If you're in the area, the 3 remaining 7805's they had are all LG of the same batch. I checked 2 of them and they were both LG.
JYH: Yeah, the LG seems a little brighter but that's about it. I wouldn't worry if you got the AUO screen at this point. I haven't heard any reports of blotchy screens like the 7811 refurbs or anything. -
I just picked mine up at the Braintree, MA store and got...
Batch number H366708; Manufacture Date of 11/29/2008
LGD3901 Panel -
is there really even a pattern besides the exact same batch number?
do people really care that much that they'd completely avoid this computer because of the AOU screen? -

Picked up a P-7805u last night.
LCD:LGD3901
Batch: H357776
Picked in up at Best Buy in Emeryville in the San Francisco Bay Area. -
Wow! I didn't know I was competing with you dad for the last oneI asked the guy there how many they got and he said 10 on the last truck load. I guess I got the last one. Awesome device I have to admit. A Bluray drive will be in my near future once prices on the internal ones come down a bit.
BTW, I was at the Watertown BB yesterday afternoon and spotted 2 7805s in their laptop holding cages. So if you are heading down 93South. You guys can come on down to that store. It's right off Storrow Drive along the Charles River along the BU campus. Keep us posted!
dsc888 -
Hey, thanks for the heads up. I just went to BB's website and it's showing in stock at a few stores, including some in NH.
Enjoy your 7805u!
JP -
i just recieved my 7805u from BB.com. i have batch #I005570.
from statup it appears i have the 1900x1200 monitor.
i compared it to my 6381( which by the way is a great lappy), and the fonts are definitly smaller.
now my problem. i have to go through the setup vista process in order to find out if its a LG or AOU.
anyway to find out without doing this? this may effect my return policy.
vynle -
Well unless you opened it carefully enough that you can reseal it, you've already entered the "open box return 15% restocking fee" territory so going further wont matter. If you opened it carefully so that it can be put back in you could always boot from something like BartPE or some similar liveCD for unix or windows etc and check it with one of those.
-
who ever bought the 4 in north lousina i hate you
-
also the 2 that where in little rock, AR, now i have to do a store to store order what ever that is. why can't bestbuy do free to store next day shipping. i mean even walmart can pull that off

Hello. I've been searching for laptops in my price range for a little bit now. I had my eye on the Acer 8930 with 9600gt. Beautiful machine, great sound, blue ray all the goodies. Just not to good with games. Now all of a sudden this Gateway jumps out with a suprise to even Gateway it seems. I'm wondering about the build quality. Aswell i have heard the fans are quite annoying. I live in Canada so if i were to buy one i would have to drive down. This is why i'm asking. =D
