The fan on the left side of my laptop (7805u FX) is throttling up and down, like it revvs up for a bit, then drops off, then just keeps on doing it. What the heck? I tried updating my nVidia drivers, and I don't know how to update my BIOS. I tried following the BIOS update sticky thread, but the only file that WOULD work for me, the link is broken.

Can someone please help me? I don't want to have to return this thing, I just got it and I love it. D:

It's normal, the gpu downclocks when not in use to save power. So when it gets too hot, the fan spins up to cool it. It's either that, or have the fan on 24/7.

It can't be normal...it's so distracting, and none of the reviews I've read have mentioned it. It's really annoying.

Its very normal, and its gateways "new" notebook fan setup.....

Try and tilt the computer up so it can breathe....

Very normal. From a cooling standpoint, it works very well..its just annoying I know.

And butler there are quite a few posts on this surging fan observation. It is also in the 7805u review. Dont worry about it it cools well...like sparky said..put about 2 inches of air underneath each of the 4 rubber feet (I used quarters duct taped together) and keep room temps normal..this bumped my CPU/GPU/HD down 10 degree. The cooling design in this laptop works..you just need to give it what it needs!

After hours of gaming on crysis almost maxed out my CPU's MAX at 49 degrees and GPU MAX is 74 degrees...no cooler

You should also invest in a compressed air can and clean it every week..... dust loves the vents on any FX... might keep the fan from revving up in the first place with additional cooling

Yes it's normal. I wondered about it myself at first but you get used to it. Just keep it raised up off whatever surface its on and enjoy your new toy. :)

From cooling stand point this works very well, however, the problem is that even during idle/surfing internet the gpu fan surges every few minutes is really annoying. Even if you use a cooling pad, it doesn't lower the GPU temperature (since the fan doesn't spin at all in between surge waiting for the gpu to hit a certain temperature, than it throttle 10-15x til it drops back down and stop completely)

I've tried flashing the bios to .10 and .12 on my 7805u fx, so far neither fixes this problem (as the matter of fact, the temperature is higher now than my stock .17 bios and it still surge)

Disabling powermizer and unclocking the gpu didn't work either. It still surges whenever it likes. And since gateway doesn't allow you to change the GPU setting at all, there doesn't seem to be anything we can do ;/

Have you actually ever owned a laptop before? The 7805u is my third laptop. The first was a Gateway MX7118 which the fans did the SAME thing. My second was a Toshiba A205 and it too did the same exact thing.

Trust me, it's normal. If you want to, go and disable nvidias powermizer and have your GPU running at full throttle.

Just learn to live with it. Yeah, it is louder then most of the notebooks fans out there, but do they all have a 9800m GTS? ;)

I noticed it too, its not load but it starts and slows down, it makes it sound like something is going bad. but from the sound of it here, its normal.

Mine does it too when it's not on my Cryo LX.

Doesn't do it often, but it does.
