I just bought a used Gateway 7811 fx and was wondering if there is anything I can do to make the laptop run cooler?
It has a fresh install of windows vista 64 bit.
Would a BIOS update make it run any cooler?
Thanks for your help.

Undervolt and buy a laptop cooler.

Make sure there is no dust blocking the vents. It accumulates quickly and needs to be blown out.
Proper application of ICDiamond on the CPU, Northbridge, GPU and gpu memory will lower temps.
A laptop cooler - Always a debate between the cryo lx and the zalman nc2000. Either way they are both most efficient when modified, since there is no perfect cooler for the 78** series right out of the box.
People have also found that raising the laptop up in the rear or raising the entire laptop by lifting the feet has helped to lower temps also. -
Modding the Zalman is far easier than the Cryo LX, FYI.
Zalman - cardboard mod to redirect airflow to certain areas; tape + cardboard = easy.
Cryo LX - replacement of stock fans + variable switch 12v adapter; screwdriver + 3x decent fans (antec tricool/scythe s-flex) + time to spare = difficult but fun! -

I also got a simple AC to USB adapter to power the cooler, and will obviously just use the usb power if using the laptop somewhere there is no ac power. -
Just get a Cooler Master NotePal Infinite. Fits the laptop perfectly and cools the whole underside. The air intakes are also on the rear so you can use it in bed etc.
