When I leave a CD in the drive on my Gateway 8510GZ I notice it is always spining the disk, even when I am not using it. To be sure, I tested this today by surfing the web for a half hour with a DVD in the drive, and sure enough I could feel the small vibration of the disk spinning, plus I could hear the disk stop when I pressed the eject button.

Is this normal? Seems like it would wear the motor faster.

I dont know if it does this on battery mode but I could try that lator I guess.

What drive? Mine has a TSST TS-L532a. It does spin up and run for a minute or two, even if I don't access it, when I first put a disc in, but then it spins down. It does NOT continue to spin incessantly. There's a disc in the drive now and it's not spinning.

However...I'll try it with a DVD later just to verify...I've got a CD in there now.

hmm.. How do I know what drive it has? it does not say on the side. It burns DVDs great though. Could the fact that I have Alcohol 120% installed be affecting the drive?

    I tested mine with a DVD...no spin.

Go into Alcohol or any other burning program and it should give you the name of the burner.

Hmm I have a dvd in there now and its NOT spinning. I guess its just something that happens ocasionaly perhaps. But that DVD was in there when I turned it on.
