My laptop crashes about 5 minutes into playing WoW on battery power. I have my battery set to high performance settings when unplugged. It just freezes and won't come back so I have to restart the computer. Its a Gateway FX with 4GB ram, 2.3 GHz processor, and nVidia 9800m GTS with 1GB of RAM. It's happened 4 times now, all but once I had to restart it. That one time all I had to do was Control+alt+dlt and it went to task manager and I could go back in and play and it didn't happen again that time, so i don't know whats wrong. Some people said it was the battery supply so i turned it up and the same thing happened. Some others said it was the RAM, but this thing has 4 GB of RAM, and and whole GB for the video card, so I might be wrong but I don't think that's it...help?

Have you tried taking out the battery then putting it on while plugged into an outlet? There will be no battery but this will show if maybe there is a problem with your battery.
-
1. I played for a while plugged in before I went downstairs with the battery.
2. I updated the drivers from Gateway, then nVidia and played on battery. It crashed again after about 45 minutes of playing.
3. HELP please...I'm getting rather annoyed. I don't want to send it back because it would be another week before it got in so I'd like to fix this one if at all possible. -
Got my P-7805u last week, I'm having issues with the display driver stopping/failing, sometimes freezing the entire display and requiring a hardboot.
I notice artifacts (flickers of stuff that doesn't belong on the display) from time to time. The display tends to freeze when I watch movies and scroll through them quickly.
I've tried switching display drivers to older ones and newer ones and it makes no difference. Considering moving the 64-bit computer to Windows XP 32-bit to see if it fixes it.
But yeah, pretty sure you're having the same issue as me. :/ -

rather than trying to find out what the problem is and voiding the warranty, just get a replacement. -
It's not that easy. The model I have is the one that has the 1920x1200 screen, which they no longer sell. I'd be going from that fantastic resolution to 1440x900. It's depressing ...
-
I have the exact same problem. I have both the freezing AND the display fail... Ive been getting bsod saying its my driver but ive tried pretty much all drivers.
@Xioustic - I tried putting 32 bit XP on it, its a real hassle. You gotta use rancids thread to get the sound to work, and you got to slip stream an install disc. even then your onboard mic wont work, and you might still get same errors, I did. and i also have the 1900x1200 screen, and i really dont want to give it up... -
I am haveing the same problem with the 1440x900 res screen also. Have tried everything i can think of, and was about to try to switch to XP to see if it was a windows problem.
I got mine two weeks ago at BestBuy, has anyone tried to return it or exchange.
Did it fix the problem? -
check this out.....

My 7805u crashed while i was watching a movie (dvd). The unit was on my bed and basically overheated which was mostly my fault
. After determining the HD failed i took it back to BBuy 6 days later and after the 'geek' squad determined it was in fact a bad HD they had the sales kid swap the machine out no questions asked. ---Heres the good part. My 1st 7805 had the 1440x900 display and the replacement has the LG 1900x1200!
Yay for my luck! Well so far its been 3 weeks now and no issues. I run fallout3,wow and COD5 on extreme settings and no issues. I am using a laptop cooler now on my desk and no more setting the laptop on bed.
(Belkin 32$ @ BBuy)

I am excited! I just got home with my exchanged FX 7805u Laptop, I turn it on and notice that the start bar is much smaller than remembered befor. I load the Nvidia Tools and what do i see, the 1920x1200 resolution! WOOHOO!!! I kept notice of the manurfactured dates onthe old and new. The first one was 2/24/09, this one is 2/27/09.
Now, lets see what the temps do...... -
Feralinitrous, download CPUID hardware monitor and post your idle and load temps please. I would like to see what another ones temps are.

Well, moved the laptop to XP 32-bit (and yeah, I did the slipstreamed nonsense and rancid's sound fix). As I type this more and more artifacts are appearing and this problem is getting way out of hand. The computer is becoming unusable. At least with Vista it could recover from the failing video card sometimes. In XP, if it freezes you have to hard-boot it.
And the kicker is: I haven't even really gamed on this thing at all. I played Spore for a few days. Other than that, only been using FireFox and CMUD (for text games) for the past month.
I'm going back home for the weekend (from college) and thinking about dropping off the laptop at BestBuy to have it replaced before I leave just in case it takes a few weeks.
I have the 1920x1200 and fought hard for it (traded my brand new 1440 version for BestBuy's display model that had 1920) when the GeekSquad guys didn't want to trade their model even though I got them to agree to trade a few days back. Now (granted a few weeks later) I'm going to have to return it for a replacement. Bummer.
Unfortunately, as I remember, the guys I had to deal with at the local GeekSquad are complete morons. They tried to tell me that the 1920x1200 resolution on their display model was due to the software they had installed, and that my 1440 model could do 1920x1200 if I had the same software/drivers too. So I had to wait for them to restore both computers using the factory discs so that they could confirm that one shipped 1920 and the other 1440. My 1-2 hour trip to BestBuy turned into a 9 hour wait to get my new laptop. Of course, after they had restored both, one was at 1920 and the other at 1440. I spent probably 30 minutes explaining that this was a common discrepancy in this model of computer... Didn't make a difference. I didn't even bother trying to tell them how blatantly technologically ignorant their statement about the 1920 and 1440 monitor actually being the same except with different device drivers was.
Needless to say, I hope they can understand the failing video card problem and don't just chalk it up to some sort of user error. I just want a quick replacement, but I have a feeling that's not going to be the case for me with these guys. I'm gonna restore to factory settings tonight just in case.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
X, this is something i noticed when i picked up my new laptop, also they have no questions asked and it took 30 min to get my new laptop, my original laptop had a Yellow Gateway Sticker on the box, my new one with the 1920 had a Blue Sticker.
The batch number on the 1920 that i picked up wensday is:
I096462
this info might help your chances of getting a good one. My temps haven't got over 123F yet. Also, i noticed that the fan activates alot sooner on this one. -
FX: Great as expected!
Hello, I have the same machine and had experienced the stated WOW lockup and other snow/artifacts during SCR and other 3d programs/games . Seems that the driver for the 9800m was sub par and there was/is no newer "good" one available. The solution for me was to use this driver modder, which allows you to change an Nvidia desktop driver so it will install on a moblie chipset. This allows you to use a desktop Nvidia driver of your choice. The M has little support compared to the desktop chipsets.
The 182.46_geforce_winvista_64bit_english_beta.exe is the one i used the mod tool on and it worked great, awsome graphics as expected from this type of high quality hardware.
Instuctions and the tool are provided at the site below. Hope the restores you to the "Happy Gamers" you once were.

yeah, but what are your temps. There is no problem with the drivers on the machine, its the heat.
