I just wanted to post my settings for games I played so it can serve as a basic guide line for fellow Gateway FX gamers.

Edit: 2014. Still here. The FX laptop series cannot handle most new games at 1080p. The only one that performed very well is Dishonored due to being a console port as well as TellTale's fantastic The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us series.

Edit: 2011. I have upgraded the processor to an X9100, which you can buy for $150 on eBay. I have updated the performance in the list below therefore expect a 5-20 fps decrease if you do not have a X9100 processor. I have seen significant performance increases in certain games such as Fallout: New Vegas, Bad Company 2 and other CPU driven games after the CPU upgrade

    My specifications:

    Gateway P-7801u FX
    1920x1200 LCD
    X9100 Core 2 Extreme (Overclocked)
    4GB DDR3 Ram
    9800m GTS 1GB VRAM (Overclocked)

Accessories: Logitech MX Revolution, Logitech Cordless Rumble Pad 2 & NZXT NC2000 Notebook Cooler.

    Poor = < 30fps | Good = > 30fps | Smooth = 60fps+

You're more than welcome to post your own settings. If you're using a different laptop of the Gateway FX family, then add that to your comment. Just follow my format and state any setting changes if they're not set at max. If you're posting any screenshots, then upload it to Imgur or Min.us instead of attaching screenshots in consideration of people who have slower internet connections.

Happy gaming and please notify me of any broken links by PM'ing me.

gateway p7811fx is outdated, not that it was any good when it launched last august. it just filled a void in the niche 17 laptop market with 9800m gts.

but now with dell studio 17 with rgb led screen available, there is no reason to buy a beginner gaming laptop for $1000+.

Thanks for the info. I don't put full trust in FPS either... if it's smooth, then I'll play it. I found that Mass Effect was interesting that way... I could play it with only ~20 FPS and it still seemed pretty smooth. Definitely can't say that about every game. Even Crysis didn't seem really smooth at 20 FPS

Am I the only one who's getting fantastic temperatures? My GPU's max temp. is around 76C or 77C when playing Mass Effect at max settings. My CPU doesn't even go higher than 45C. I believe that you can actually manage to get higher settings in GTA 4. Check this video out of a guy playing GTA 4 at 1920x1200 with high settings:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3Cx0swOhhc
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2l0CWa9v94

Anyone is welcome to post their settings on this thread. I will only keep updating my original post until I run out of space. Please post your temperatures too as Pump did.

I dont check my temps all that often but the game here that gets my 7811 the hottest is DiRT.
What i tend to do if my fps seems like it could use a lil pick-me-up i lower the shadows to medium and that usually does the trick, also my AA for most games is x4...but some do have x2 (just cant remember witch >.>)

on these machines you can pretty much run anything on high...except crysis (but i get that on med/high)

No. Read my original post. I have provided the explanation to why I don't care about fps. Stutter, Little Stutter, No Stutter. Three settings. FPS means nothing unless you're a hardcore gamer. If you are, then you should be spending more on a laptop rather than spend less than $1500 for a gaming notebook aimed at casual gamers.

For drivers just get the most updated version you can, either from Nvidia or from laptopvideo2go.com

That will give you the best FPS in your games, no need to go driver hunting for older drivers for 1 or 2 FPS in a particular game.

    Download them from here:

If you're willing to play around with modified drivers then check out nvidia drives from Xfastest. Google is your friend.

anyone else notice the troller trying to compare his dell studio 17 to a P-series? lol... the thread isn't even about the 7811 it's about the 7801u.. but please enjoy your santa rosa chipset with 800mhz memory and 256mb ddr2 on the gpu, don't worry with that RGB LED screen you won't miss any of the beautiful detail while lagging!

but but but, its just so much cheaper, and so much better because its cheaper and thats all taht matters is how cheap it is. Sad part is to get the same stats as the 78xx series it costs about the same. Which is kinda funny seeing as how he is all psyched that its under 1k... lol...

Kinda like that guy compairing his DV7 HP to one of these. sigh...

Nvidia 179.48 Beta drivers. I'll most probably update it to Xfastest 185.20 drivers when I play GTA IV since there are specific fixes for the game in those drivers.

@ everyone posting on this thread
Please ignore all trolls and just post settings of your games on your P-7801u. I don't want this thread to become pages and pages of trivial stuff. If you have questions directed to certain users, then PM them.

It also looks like I'll have to post screenshots in the coming days since this thread is already close to 500.

I Run TF2, L4D, and CoD4, on max settings, all smooth....

yet GTA4 at High Settings ( not even max ) and Devil May Cry 4 I get fps lag and its not that smooth as you'd hope for. Anyone know how to fix this issue?

    You're right.

Anyways, I have updated my original post with screenshots. There will be more games and screenshots to come but you have to be patient since I have a life to live. :p

Is that on a P-7805u? I really doubt Last Remnant can be so demanding that it has to be played at 1440x900.

mine is p-7805u but this is crysis warhead result

    1440x900
    all medium setting
    smooth gameplay most of time..
    gets 25-60fps

    on high setting
it's playable but not very smooth time to time..
gets around 20-40 fps on 1280x800 all on high.

i am pretty sure 7801 is about same..
oh, it's at stock gpu speed, no OC. :)

I found that last remnant is default set on no limit of FPS... what you have to do is set the max to 60 fps and it wont make ur cpu run at 100 percent and ur gpu won't get as hot.

I didn't want to upgrade my 7801u in any way. I have all the power I need to use AutoCAD and play all the games I can throw at it. Everything is stock. No notebook coolers either.

I plan on updating this thread every now and then when I come around to playing new games. I will not be adding any games I have played before like Jade Empire or the older Splinter Cell series since it's just redundant to add the data when my laptop can handle almost every game that has been released in the past few months at 1920x1200.

I have to say that without a doubt the Gateway P-7801u, for $1145, is the best budget gaming laptop out there today. Nothing can match its number of features (1920x1200 lcd, 4GB DDR3, HDMI) for its price point.

    *Updated*
Added Portal. I think it's clear enough that any game based on the Source engine can be handled by the P-7801u without problems.

There is nothiing wrong with getting the most out of your system. I play games maybe an hour a month if that. You can bet though I still care about FPS and other system perfomance items.
