Hello everyone, ive been reading the posts on here for some time and it always has alot of great info, so i had to register eventually.

My question is i have a stock fx p 7808u quad i bought back in 2009, works fine, no issues with it, other than its a bit outdated...i opened it up to clean the thing out, because it had a bit of an overheating issue (dragged the thing out to afghanistan, where it collected alot of dust), cleaned it out...no more issues with overheating....but after doing doing so i was wondering what i can do to, or if it was even possible to switch out pieces and put in any upgrades to increase its performance.

I see alot of threads about the p-7805 and 7811...people cracking them open and updating processors and what not....but the info on the 7808u is extremely sparse.

If anyone has any experience with this machine, any advice would be greatly appreciated....it has a q9000 series quad..with the 9c.17.00 BIOS, other information can be easily read online..or i can post it when i get home.

Also....is it possible to upgarde this with an entirely new motherboard?....say likt the p 7908u quad?

any upgrade to a P7805 etc is doable on the P7808. Your one primary advantage is you also, like P79xx owners, can use a quad core as well................

Well thats good news, and thank you for the response.....I'm assuming that i would need to start off with a new motherboard in order to update the processors....this is the first time im going to do an undertaking such as this, but i figure you have to learn at some point....or is it possible to replace the existing processors in the motherboard that is already in it?...any suggestions or decent resources i could take a look at in order to start this undertaking?......I guess my big question is whats the first step...any advice is much appreciated.

since you have the Q9000 already, a quad core, you can use up to a qx9300 in your present main board. My only concern is the power handling capability of the board. My old P7805 with x9100 had to run a much higher vcore at the same speeds compared to the P79 board. This shows the power caps are much better on the P79.

On either board you will need to run throttle stop and undevolt. The quads run just too hot. Even under prime95 the stock q9000 will throttle at stock speeds as the cooling is just not sufficient. This is why Gateway enver pushed the quads in P78 or P79 flavors.

Now if you are running Win 7 be sure to get the AMD bulldozer patch as in unoptimized multithread and single thread apps this can give you a free 5% performance increase from the scheduler. If you can take windows 8 it will give you a free 10% increase over stock windows 7.

Interesting..... So I just need to update the processors, under volt, and use throttle stop and I'm good to go?. Yeah I'm still running vista on this machine, so I need to update the OS. I'm gonna take a look at where I can acquire some qx9300 cores. So can I just pop in the processors and will it automatically recognize the upgrade anything need to be done with the BIOS, or is it really that simple?

yes put in the new cpu, if you can use a QS instead of OEM cpu get a q9200 and save some money. You use Throttle swtop to both control then CPU speed on xtreme cpu's and to control the vcore. Unfortunately there is no bulldozer patch for vista...
