I just purchased a Gateway M1624 laptop. It has an AMD Turion TL-60 processor. The laptop works great, except it is having fan problems. The fan will change from low-speed to high-speed, and back again, every couple of seconds. I don't mind a loud fan, but when it is constantly changing speeds it gets very annoying.

I tried to update the bios, clean out the fan, and check for obstructions, but everything seems fine. I also tried to download SpeedFan 4.35 - but it wouldn't detect or control the fan.

The unit is still under warranty, but I don't want to ship it off to Gateway for repair - if they would even fix such an issue.

Has anyone heard of this problem, and does anyone know of a solution? A hardware or software fix would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

It could very well be a defective ACPI controller or a bad sensor. Gateway would repair it without a doubt assuming it is abnormal function. What are your temps like?

    Thanks for the reply..

The program won't pick up the temps, but it doesn't seem to be running too hot. For some reason I've always had bad luck with AMD cooling in laptops - I know this isn't a processor issue, but every Intel chip I've had has been fine, and every AMD has either overheated, ran high-fan all the time, or this.

I'm a computer technician, so maybe they'll just send me the part to replace myself..

Download CoreTemp. It works on Vista all the way up to 64 bit. You will then get your pics.

I'm having the same problem with a new Gateway M1626. Coretemp shows fairly low temps (Core 0: 27 , Core 1: 37), but it pretty much constantly does the 2 second fan blast thing. Did you find a solution?
    thanks!

I have the same notebook and am having the same issue. I have been working with gateway trying to fix it but gateway does not try to fix systems. if you send it in they will simply replace the fan or proccessor, which does not fix the problem. The problem lies with the fan speed controller. I am going to try to get them to fix it again. if they do I will let you know so you can tell them how to fix it. :)

Its me again, I contacted gateway again about the issue and they are at a loss to identify the issue  , but we are not the only ones having this issue  . If you tell them you need it back fast they will give you a express shipping label and box (they give you a box with everything you need to pack the laptop). And you dont pay a cent out of your pocket to have it repaired :) . I am sending mine in again and this time they will replace the motherboard.

Thanks for the tip. I did contact Gateway about it and they just suggested I return it to the vendor. I decided to keep it, thinking it was cheap and I was otherwise happy with it (4GB and Vista 64 bit etc is great for the price). I also suspected that a replacement would have the same problem.
I found a kinda workaround that at least makes the fan less annoying when the room's quiet. The fan seems to do the bursting "wave" sound when the CPU is at ~38 - 44C. Below that range it shuts off and above it it runs constantly but low speed. It's hard to keep it super cool unless you're in a pretty cold room, so I keep it above the range (at about 50 - 55C) by running Folding@Home and allowing it about 40% of a CPU core. It's good because there is an option to stop it running when on battery, so that it doesn't drain it. I'm plugged in 90% of the time.

Let us know if they finally fix it!
