This is an old laptop, running Windows XP. I cannot find the sound driver, unless I am willing to pay money for "driver detective" type software. Can someone please direct me to a resource for free drivers for this model of laptop? I really need the sound and wi-fi drivers.
Gateway's driver support page provides drivers for chipset, video, and modem, but no sound.
They also offer a wi-fi driver, but it does not recognize my controller.
Any guidance is appreciated.

Audio device comes from Analog Devices and is called SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio.
You can google for the driver but beware of websites that re-package the drivers to incluse thei iown installer - it's likely to contain spyware or aware.
It's safer to stick to notebook manufacturers or known websites. Check this driver from Lebovo: SoundMax Audio Software for Windows XP - ThinkPad or maybe this one: High Definition Audio Codec Drivers Version 6.10.6498.0 (HP) -
Thanks, but that driver produces a message stating "This is not the correct audio driver for this system (xp). The installer will now exit."

Oops i overlooked the SoundMax....going to give that one a try now.
edit
This one produces "The HDA Audio bus driver is required and not found." -
Go to device manager and find the not-installed sound device (yellow exclamation mark) and find the device ID for it, it should look like this "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C5".

Pci\ven_8086&dev_24c5&subsys_203a161f&rev_03\3&61aaa01&0&fd

The friend that I am helping just found his restore CD and brought it to me
So, for what it is worth, I appreciate your help, but if the factory restore cd doesn't work, i'm throwing in the towel.
The AC'97 driver you linked me to only produced a blue screen, but after reboot, the system tray reported "multi media audio controller found". When I went to view the list in device manager, under "sound" the list looked normal with the one exception of a yellow exclamation mark for the controller.
One last thing: I would really like to know how the hardware vendor ID allows you to trace back to the manufacturer and chipset. Can you explain that to me? -
It's actually not getting any clearer
Lets try this - try to install Realtek's AC97 audio driver (can't give you a direct link, you'll gave to agree to something and then choose an extremely slow server) - go here Realtek -
I misspoke -- I tried an AC'97 from my own googling. This was not a driver that you linked me to. Sorry for the confusion.
I have a factory restore executing at the moment. When it is complete, I will provide the Vendor ID as you requested above, just in case you still want to know. It should be the correct one, and the sound and wi-fi should both be working.
