Hello all, noob to these forums, and basically to laptops in general. Obviously, I'm looking for some help here...

The problem: My boss gave me his old notebook, Gateway M320S 3TO, slightly messed up screen, no biggie, I just want the lappy for my garage. When I got it, it had XP Pro on it, 120GB HDD, only 30GB for the XP partition. Two other partitions were not recognized.

I texted the boss, he told me he slapped two Linux partitions on it, but screwed them up. Okay, no probs, I format and toss XP Pro SP3 on it.

Okay, guess I should have saved the networks drivers before doing that.

The wireless worked fine before the format, now I can't install the drivers for it. I dwnlded the drivers from Gateway, Broadcom wireless, but they're kinda useless as the wireless card doesn't show up in the device manager, and the network controller has a yellow "?" beside it. Now, I'm assuming that because the network controller driver is not installed, my wireless card doesn't show up.

For the life of me I cannot find the network drivers online, including the Gateway site. Seriously, I've spent about 6 hours googling this, it's driving me nuckin futz(and that's a short ride for me), the card worked before the format, I know it's good, so is the controller, I just can't score a driver.

This has the Celery 1.4ghz in it, not the Pentium. If this would help, ser# is 0035841623.

If I can post a screen shot, here it is... [IMG]

No probs with the sound, it's only missing in that screenshot cause I had just formatted, AGAIN!

Thanks for any help you can give me guys(and gals, as the case may be), it will be much appreciated.

Just wanted to add, the partitions I couldn't recover were Linux partitions the boss put on the HDD, then he uninstalled Linux and just left it as it was. Nothing wrong with the HDD, I recovered the 120GB, well, 114gb, you know what I mean, the HDD is not the problem.

I was unable to get to the gateway site but you best bet is to go to gateway site and look in their support link for your laptop model number and there you should see the drivers for your network and various drivers for your laptop.

Well regardless the serial you gave doesn't show up or is not a valid number to even begin to find out what unit of Gateway laptop you have. So you might want to go back and double check and find the correct serial number as the one you gave doesn't show up in Gateway site. And if you can't find it your last option would be to chat live with them or call their customer help line...

It's the number printed on the bottom of the notebook. Not my fault if Gateway is totally useless when it comes to customer servicve. If they were helpful, AT ALL, I wouldn't be in here looking for help.

Sorry about being just a bit of a dink, I'm getting very frustrated here. I tried the ser# myself, invalid, which is bogus, it's Gateway's sticker on the bottom of the laptop...

Now I'm going to try Dell drivers, seems to have worked, gotta reboot and see what happens.

MS gives this info on how to get your computer serial number:

How to find computer serial number

Try it from the command prompt.

Note kb article is from 2008 so it may not work for you for later OS's. It did not work for me with Win7 64.

Comes up as "To be filled by OEM"

As for the script, tried running it after copying it to a notepad doc and saving as a vbs file, I'm just not getting any results.

    Thanks for trying...

If I was to just go out and buy another wireless card would it come with the network drivers? How about a USB wireless card?

I mean, if the new card doesn't have the network controller drivers, it's a waste of money. I'm assuming a new card will come with drivers, INCLUDING network controller drivers, and that should solve the problem.

Why is/are Gateway being pricks about this? Just give me the freaking drivers!

Well they do have the Wireless LAN driver for your computer and you downloaded that but for some reason it didn't work.

Maybe that is why your boss gave it to you for free.

Maybe time to move on and get a newer computer. That one is too small for real work anyway. ;)

It's just for out in the garage, no work going on. I don't smoke in the house, just nice to have the computer out in the garage for my smoke breaks.

In the end, I finally found the driver, Download Broadcom 4318E(BCM94318MPG) Wireless Win2000, XP Driver | Wireless Driver & Software

Got the wireless back up and running. Thanks for trying to help people, much appreciated.
