    Hi Broni,
Thanks for the info, I tried the route you suggested and chickened out when I could not get the drivers to work (i'm not very good) so I reinstalled using the recovery disc which formatted the 2 drives and lo and behold without the crap that gateway put on, big fix etc it works nearly as quickly as xp!

Hmmm... seems like some of you are having difficulty getting sound drivers to work?
I have them archived, since they were such a pain to get in the first place.
If you're REALLY stuck (and I mean REALLY stuck!) email me on [email protected] and I'll get the files to you.

    Regards
    T :)

    Yeh, Charlie..
You can turn off the indexing on Vista that speeds it up quite a bit. But I too went down the RecoveryDisk route. Yeh, it DID speed things up, but I hafta admit, it's defo faster with XP. If you're happy with the speed your lappy runs, then that's great news, and will save you quite a bit of hassle.
If you find that some stuff isnt quite as responsive as you'd like, then I'd still recommend XP.
Great little laptop. wasn't designed to be high spec. But I hafta say, for browsing and music and basic stuff, mine does the job really nicely with XP. And it was inexpensive. So If my daughter happens to set fire to it (which is always a possibilty lol) or it dies horribly, i'll not be too upset!

    Enjoy.

I've come up with a solution for your audio woes.
(Thanks, Gateway, for being absolutely no help as usual..)

Firstly, download the UAA bus driver from here, and install it....

    (UAA highdef bus driver, sp32646)
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...8-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1843446&os=228

Then download the following driver but DO NOT INSTALL yet!

    http://support.gateway.com/support/...udio DriverVersion: 5.10.5185.0&uid=188955353

extract to desktop and open the folder D00758-001-001
    open the folder WDM.

download the file 92XXm4-2.ini I've hosted from the following link.

    http://www.filehosting.cc/?d=6AAA310C2

Copy it to the folder you have open (D00758-001-001/WDM), and click {replace}.

Go back to the folder 'D00758-001-001' and run 'setup'.
One little reboot later and your audio will work just fine!

(yes, I HAVE tested it on mine ;) )

    ***UPDATE****

Sorry, that file host I used is rubbish! It DOES work, but it makes u enter a squigglycode and wait for 30 seconds... :(

I've hosted the fix on Mediafire which seems a lot better!

    http://www.mediafire.com/?ah9nen9u3ox

By the way, this isn't a 'dirty' hack or anything like that. I've used the same XP audio driver, (for another Gateway) but it's default 92XXm4-2.ini file doesnt set up the ExtAmpCtrl registers used on the ML3108B. I simply pinched the file from the driver pack previously available on the now-dead link.

This thread has been SO helpful in getting XP onto this laptop. But I'm stuck on the final hurdle (there's always something), I can't get the audio to work.

I've tried both methods suggested in this thread and both times I get:

"This system does not support the driver you are attempting to install".

Can someone please talk me through this in the simplest terms so I'm positive that it's not me doing something wrong? Oh and the last link in the original post doesn't work for me, it asks for my product key but apparently mine is invalid.

    Thanks.

    Ok, folks.
XP Audio driver installation for the 3108b. LAST TIME! hahaha.....

1: Download UAA HighDef Bus Driver from here...

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...8-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1843446&os=228

2: Install UAA driver you've just downloaded.

3: Download XP Audio Driver (for 3109 I think) from here

    http://support.gateway.com/support/...udio DriverVersion: 5.10.5185.0&uid=188955353

4: Extract the audio driver to a folder on the desktop.
5: Open the extracted folder, and open the subfolder 'WDM'.
6: Replace the file '92XXM4-2.INI' with the file downloaded from here

    http://www.mediafire.com/?ah9nen9u3ox

7: Go back into the main folder you extracted the driver to, and run SETUP.EXE

8: Open a nice cold beer and celebrate the fact that your audio actually DOES work!

I've just uninstalled the UAA and Audio drivers and gone through this AGAIN on my ML3108b to re-check it. It works 100%.

    Oh, can I add a step #9?
    Oh well..
9: Remind everyone that Gateway offer rubbish support! (And it's quit)

Xarope, When you run SETUP, you probably run SETUP.EXE from a CMD window. most likely you ran the XP 'SETUP.EXE' which would have asked you for your product code. Run the SETUP.EXE from the extracted driver window by double-clicking on it.

Also, when you got the message saying "the system does not support the driver..." etc, I suspect you hadnt installed the UAA HighDefinition Audio Bus Driver before you tried to install the Audio Driver pack.

Try uninstalling both the UAA driver and any Audio drivers, then follow EXACTLY all the steps in my previous post.

My email addy is in a previous post if you're still struggling.

    HELLO

!!!I HAVE PUT ALL DRIVERS INTO ONE ZIP FILE!!!
    YOU CAN DOWNLOAD IT HERE
    http://www.uploadjockey.com/download/9214025/gateway_ml3108b_xp.zip

It has everything slimmed down, and will only work for XP and possibly 2K, all the 9X stuff has gone and some of the help files have been removed in the graphics driver section to make it < 100MB for easy distribution.

Start with folder 01 and work your way thru to 05, restarting each time you complete a step. Couldn't be simpler !

    Cheers,
    Hot-Fresh-Rider.

Firstly a huge thanks to Bronislaw and Tel-b for their efforts in putting together this thread!

To answer a previous question, I first installed 2 GB ram under Vista, but found no significant difference in performance. I would definitely recommend Upgrading to XP. The extra ram doesn't hurt either.

I fitted a new (larger) hard drive and did a clean install of XP Pro, and followed the steps and have been happily running it on this machine for 6 months or so now, but I have noticed a few bugs.

Firstly, if it goes into suspend by closing the lid, or power-saving, when it wakes up, there is no audio, and sometimes the screen stays black. A reboot fixes it in about a minute or so, but I got round it by setting the power settings to 'always on'.

However recently I've found another bug which is probably related, which is that the microphone wasn't working.

After trying several different Sigmatel audio drivers, I noticed the SigmaTel Audio utility in the Control Panel, which lo and behold had the 'Input Monitor' set to mute. Ah ha! I cried, and un-muted it. My microphone started picking up voice and sending it back to me through the speakers (and when I plugged it in, the headset). Flushed with success, I fired up teamspeak and ; blue-screen-of-death - restart.

This happens every time I try to actually use the microphone in anger; with the sound recorder etc. I don't know if there is something funky with the settings or not. The blue-screen doesn't last long enough to read before rebooting, and the windows error message was just a few strings of binary, which was meaningless to me.

    Idea's?

Hey Guys, I hope someone is still keeping an eye on this thread. My younger sister has the laptop. She only really uses it for "homework" and playing World of Warcraft. Although World of Warcraft runs fine on vista, it is very laggy, so I decided to "downgrade" it to XP. This thread has been an absolute god-send to be quite honest and I am so grateful.

So, everything works, apart from the wireless. I would go as far as to call my self quite an expert when it comes to IT, but I am completely stumped with this wireless problem. With the drivers you have provided, The drivers are installed no problem along with the realtek wireless program, problem is, it doesn’t find any wireless networks, can not find any!! I have tried configuring wireless with windows and at least 10 different drivers that I have managed to find online (and no, it isn’t generic troubleshooting, the wireless is turned on haha).

Any clues anyone, I would be so happy to finally get this thing sorted.

Thanks in advance for your time and help.

You might need to turn the Wireless on using the blue function key on the keyboard and one of the F keys.

No, the wireless is turned on, still haven't resolved this one, I think I'll just have to buy a wireless dongle for it.

vista uses 850mb to 950mb ram at idle , even xp soon lags up on 512mb ram also microsoft will soon stop updates for xp. gateway laptops dont ship with a recovery vista cd u have to make one from your laptop it only takes 6 mins to wright the recovery dvd , if u format without making the disc theres no going back to your original vista you are stuck with xp and dodgy patched drivers

Hi All, Just wanted to say thanks to all for the support on this forum. I was given an ML3108b to fix by the old dear who does my babysitting...

OMG.. don't get me wrong I know my way around a PC... I build my own gaming rigs, I have old laptops and Media Centre pc's all over the house which I rebuild when they die, or I just get bored and fancy doing a reinstall. But I have never had so much trouble finding the right drivers for any PC (not even the little Fujutsu -Siemens Tablet that no one has heard of was this difficult to install)

Vista was never going to run on this PC with a 1.8G CPU and 512Mb Ram... someone was feeling optimistic the day they said "Ooh lets put Vista on it :)"

Thanks again to all those who dug out the links and the drivers, when I finally found the tread it was a joy!!

    Cheers
    Tim
