You can increase the ram to 3 gigs, If you put 4 gigs in it it probably will not boot. XP is less demanding and will probably run faster than vista. Also this is just my preference, I would go with XP Professional. With the ram I know the 2 gig stick either has to go on the bottom or the top, I forget, you would have to try it and if it dont work just switch it around.

    Put in cd

    turn on

select to boot from cd (usually one of the f keys)

press any key when asked to boot from cd

    and start the process

(make sure you have everything backed up)

Quick Format the harddrive then install, make sure you have a second computer to download the drivers.

As with alot of computers that come with vista, finding the XP drivers is a bit tough, but if you look hard enough I'm sure you'll find them.

    Good luck!

    Buy an external hard drive.

Forget backing it up. I'll just re format the whole thing.

What are the main drivers I need?

I'd say just lan and wifi to start, just so you can search later on the laptop or through windows update.
