I would say the gateway since it has a Go 6100 vs x3100 and 40 gb of more space.

I agree with Lakjin. The Gateway is better spec'd in every aspect with the exception of CPU which is probably a dead tie. The Compaq is going to have a little bit better build quality, but unless you are planning to throw your laptop around like Ike and Tina, you'd never know the difference.

The compaq isn't really a bad notebook. I bought one for my girlfriend last december and it seems to be doing all right for her. From time to time the fans will "forget" to kick on after being on for a long time so you just have to restart to get it moving again. It was useless with 1GB very slow and sluggish. If i remember correctly it was eatting 40-66% of the RAM on idle with vista. The compaq will only hold a max of 2GB RAM. and the integrated graphics means you won't be able to play even older games such as counter strike. So if you want to play games, look for dedicated graphics.
I think you'll want to update the RAM either way, i do not have experience with the gateway so i can't comment on it. -
ya i would not recommend running vista on those machines. unless you plan on upgrading the ram.
