I have a Gateway MX3414 and my father has a MX6450. I'm going on a long flight and wanted an extra battery and found that his battery fits and starts my laptop. Gateway won't give me any answer as to whether it can cause any damage, they just want to sell me another battery. The specification for each are:

The back of his battery for the MX6450
    Gateway 8MSB
    Model No.: SQU-413
    Rechargeable Li-ion Battery
    Rating 14.4V --- 4800mAh

My battery for the MX3414 says:
    Gateway 6MSBG
    Model No.: 3UR18650F-2-QC-MA1
    Rechargeable Li-ion Battery
    Rating 11.1V ---4800mAh

Does anyone know if the MX6450 battery will cause problems with my MX3414?

I am not an expert in this but I would never try this. If the spec is correct, your MX3414 will draw a larger current (more power) from the MX6450 battery.

My advise: don't try it. Prolonged use of a different battery could damage your notebook. I wouldn't risk it just for a longer battery life.
