I purchased the MX6425 in Jan 06. My very first laptop and was very please with the figs and the price.
In March decided to do a restore and got error C0000218 Registry Hive File Failure config/blah/blach/security. Called Tech and was told that I had to send it in for repair. No attempt to trouble shoot. Just send it in. Not wanting to wait for shipping and that sort of thing. I took it to CompUSA. It was determined that it was some type of partition problem with the hard drive.
I resulted in sending it end. Got it back a few days later with a fresh install of the OS. Everything seem to be running smoothly, however the chassis of the PC was not aligned correctly with the side ports on the PC. I decided to send it for that fix a few months later.
I get the PC back and the Touch Pad (mouse) would not move or work. Called Tech and was told the only way I could get it to work was unless I did a system restore. Placed the disk in and low and behold C0000218 Registry Hive File Failure. Sent it back in, the mouse worked but was still getting registry error. So I sent it back in. This has went back and forth 4 more times, before I contacted their Corporate. The Coporate guy had me send it to him directly. This guy had my PC for 2 weeks straight. I get it back turn it on, and wasn't on the PC for an hour when it just shut down on. Anytime I turned it on, it would shut down in about 10 mins to hour.
At this point they are replacing my PC with the MX6450. They orginally tried to replace it with the 6440, but the processor on that one was lower that my MX6425. I'm so terrified of getting the new system, because I just know I'm going to have problems with it.
Gateway has to be the WORST computer manufacture to name. Anyone have any suggestions or feedback please share.

yea...I've been hoping for Gateway's demise for several years now.
That being said: keep a running record of all of your contacts with Gateway, as well as repair dates, reasons, and work performed. If you get enough, you might be able to lemon law the computer for a refund.
But, you could just sell the notebook and buy something else.
Gateway MX6425 now getting 6450
