looks like a good machine. going to be better than the celeron ones they have used in the 6000 series previously. 512 ram, 80gb, dvd burner.. looks good. the 3300+ mobile sempron is supposed to be pretty good on battery life too. good for guys who do internet, word processing, and some light multimedia. the x200 isnt bad either... def better than the intel integrated than comes with the celeron models. Looks good to me. I played on it a little bit and work and seems pretty nice for 650$ this week

thanks for the reply, ill be doing photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver, that type of work on it, for school. So it doesnt need to be extremely fast with those programs. I have a desktop for any heavy work.
looks like ill be picking this up today, again thanks for the reply -
bump the ram up to a gig. that will help out a lot. its more of a basic machine but not bad
-
I have had this unit for about a week and a few days. Little slow sometimes I think that a bump to 1 gig on the ram will fix this just fine. Battery life is ok but not great about 2.4-2.5 hrs. The wireless capabilities are great good reception.
Will add more as I use the machine.

I just bought Myself
Ok, does what I need it to do, will bump up the Ram to 1GB, only thing that bugs me is isnt the 3300 supposed to run at 2Ghz?
But windows is reading it at 1.6GHZ now I know its only 400mhz diffrence and I know isnt that much, but why advertise it as 2Ghz??
As well as the HD supposed to be a 80GB but isnt when you add C Drive and the Backup Info on D it does not equal to 80GB its like 74 or something
Any info I could get help on?
Thanks! -
wmoore026,
Everything on your computer is fineYour processor is running at a lower clock speed to conserve juice (battery). When the computer is idle, it is running at, maybe, 800mhz. When you are doing more demanding tasks, it will step up to higher speeds such as 1.6ghz, or the max. You can disable this, but I see no benefits for you will not notice any difference in performance.
Your harddrive is fine too. You probably have a partition devoted to system restore. You can disable it, but I would keep it unless you are running very low on storage. -
ok thanks!
yeh I gugures as much for procerssor 400mhz is not a big performance drop of boost
but as far as the HardDrive that was both partitions the C one and D for System Recovery could be some bad sectors but doubtful. but no Biggie I plan on getting an External Hard Drive so was just curious!
Thanks!
Anyone know what type Ram this takes gonna price it out so I can upgrade to 1GB from 512MB
I am good with DeskTops but not with Notebooks
ha -
Anybody else try this machine yet. I added another 512mb ram to it and it is faster but I think that the hold up now is the 4200rpm HD. I guess I can chalk this up to being in a hurry when I purchased the machine. Don't get me wrong I'm happy with it just would like it to load apps faster.
Let me know if you guys are happy with yours.

Guys (or gals), I am admittadly not very knowledgable on AMD processors, but from what I read at Best Buy they are advertising this as an AMD Sempron and not a Sempron Mobile. Which is it and does it make much difference? I know Intel was fond of putting desktop processors in notebooks which led to really loud fans and a lot of heat.

I got it on April 24th, 2006 - it died on May 19th, 2006.
The LCD lit up but no picture. On its way back for repair.
I haven't used the burner yet, or any of the software except works to do a small spread sheet. I did use the DVD player just to see that it works.
512MB is enough but I can see a second 512MB would be a big help.
CPU seems sufficiant for any tasks I would perform.
If you want to know what memory is supported or cpu's for future upgrades, forget the gateway website. it doesn't show you anything but its stock configuration.
The hard drive has a back-up partition so drive C isn't going to show the full 80. Also the slow speed of the hard drive is a big bottle neck. Newegg and pricewatch have several 7200rpm drives that will fit it.
Crucial memory has upgrade modules listed for it on their site if you need to find memory.
The fan is very quiet during use and while the bottem does warm up a bit it isn't a lap scorcher. -
Nevermind, just bought it a few days ago and it is the mobile version of the processor. Have to say I really love it. Seems to move pretty fast (although they all do when they're new) and is whisper quite. Good looking screen, nice ergonomics and looks like it cost much more than it did. Got mine for $650 at Best Buy but it's now up to the regular price of $800. Would still say it's a great deal at that price. Just compare it to some others with similar specs...especially with a 2 ghz processor.
-
Hope mine doesn't do that!

i bought this not too long ago, to replace my old laptop due to a cracked screen that bestbuy wouldnt honor. so far, im pretty happy with is. just a question...how long is the gateway manufacturer warrenty?
-
1 year on all products

I considering on buying this laptop for school. I sounds great and looks perfect for what I need. I just have one question for those who have this notebook. Is there a external volume/ media controls on the notebook? Tried finding pictures of the notebook but none showing one. I just want to confrim. Thanks
-
Sadly, there is not. You can, however, use 'Fn' + 'pg up' or 'pg dn,' but what's that noise? You have to press two keys.
-
ahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! thanks Hellmans
-
Heh, no problem. By the way, is "ahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!" a good thing or a bad thing?
-
bad thing...That's my only pet pev* on laptops
-
I have one, and like someone else in the thread, after a month and 2 days,
it went back to Best Buy, where they've had it for a month to fix it. Power
button is doing nothing at all...
When it was working, it was ok, ran a bit hot. I was also dissapointed i didn't
check out all of it's connections before bringing it home. It'll assume a USB
printer and mouse, so if you're replacing an older system, that might be a
consideration...
In my experience, Gateway hasn't had the best customer service, and I prob
would have gone with something else. Darn sales...They got to me -
when you buy a hard drive.. there is a certain amount of useable space. Typically, you get about 93% of the advertised size. I just got a 320 for the desktop and i have 298 avail, etc. that applies to flash drive, camera cards, and all HDDs. its pc2700 sodimm for the ram
