    Hi everyone,

I bought an NV5214u laptop from Best Buy this week, and while everything else works wonderfully (and faster than my old Sony VGN-S550P), I'm having a tough time waking up my computer. I often put my machine to sleep by closing the lid, but when resuming via the power button, an error message about some incorrect hardware/software configuration is generated. Sometimes, though, all I get is a black screen (with the LCDs for power and hard drive still running). What should I do about this issue? Please keep in mind that all I did with my new NV52 is to remove the usual Norton, MS Office and other bloatware without tampering with necessary Windows/Gateway features. If it helps, I installed the following applications for both work and play--Firefox (3.5.2); Move Player; K-Lite Codec Pack Basic (for Win Media Player); Live Messenger; Skype; CCleaner; Auslogics Defrag; Revo Uninstaller; Avast; and Gamebooster. I'm also using the Logitech Nano mouse for daily tasks. My machine's OS version is Vista Home Premium SP2 with all the updated BIOS and drivers from Gateway.

It's so strange that I'm having this problem. Both my old Sony (Vista Business SP2) and Asus K50 (the Vista Home Premium SP2 PC I returned to Best Buy for this NV52) can enter and exit from Sleep mode without a hitch.

Thanks for your help in advance. And yes, I did call Gateway support yesterday, but the tech can't seem to understand what I'm trying to say (rolls eyes).

I guess It may be a hardware that goes on sleep to save power. I'm not sure but try to desactivate the hardware that goes on sleep mode to save energy. Such wireless, network adapter...
this property can be find in device manager, properties , than Power management and uncheck the "allow the computer to turn off this device..." box. Apply and test your sleep mode.
    Hope it helps.

I just tried out your suggestion, and unfortunately, it did not work. Putting my machine to sleep is such a basic task, but I don't know what's causing this issue.

    Any other suggestions?

In your first post, you didn't say if the problem came after removing software or not?
It may be Revo Uninstalle or ccleaner.

Actually, I went ahead and used Gateway's recovery program to restore the whole hard drive to factory defaults. Despite this process, the same problem exists. So it cannot be Revo Uninstaller nor Ccleaner.

Do you think Best Buy will allow another exchange? I already tried this with my Asus K50IJ about a week ago... since the Gateway seemed much more on paper. Of course, I'd rather avoid this hassle by coming up with a solution first.

I recently found the solution for one part of your problem. That is for the case when you close the lid and then when you open it back up the laptop comes up with a blank screen. The solution was to enable the hibernate file that got corrupt for some reason. You'll find the exact directions here: http://annoyances-resolved.blogspot.com/2009/08/laptop-wont-resume-from-sleep.html . Now if you still have problems after you followed directions, there may be other options, so don't give up! Let us know back here how the solution worked for you!

Yes it's definitely worth checking different power saving options for when the pc goes to sleep, don't forget the hard drive and also the processor power management.

If it's currently set to sleep when the lid is closed you can also try setting the lid close to do nothing, and then sleep after a short amount of time idling.

Yeah I had some issues with it. thats why I dislike factory OS under gateway, HP, on and on. I changed settings from power mode and sleep mode to turn on without power save/ sleep mode for now. till Window 7 with full OEM verison release by this month.
