    Free W7 Upgrade

I'm guessing most know about this and it was probably already posted, but i'm not in the gateway forums much anymore. So forgive me if this has already been discussed.

Gateway lists the p-78 notebooks as qualifying for the free upgrade, but you are supposed to have purchased it between june 26, 2009 and jan 31,2010.

yeah i purchased mine like a month ago from Tigerdirect.com and i'm still waiting on my disks.. IMPATIENTLY!!! haha

I'm just trying to hold off putting all my programs on my laptop until i upgrade to prevent me from wasting hours of my life re-installing everything..

btw-has anyone upgraded to win7 on the 7805U yet? How long does it take? Do you have to re-install all the drivers?

From a clean install you will have to install the SD card slot driver and also the video driver, since a plain M$ video driver is installed by default.
Upgrade should be about the same if not even less to install.

sounds good.. I had heard that upgrade times vary dramatically from machine to machine, hadn't heard about the 7805u yet though. I'm sure it won't be too bad.

Actually, I tried the upgrade first with my P7805-u & let's just say it was at about 5 hours & only was about 33% done. This is from a retail copy of Win7 Home Premium 64-bit. I just cancelled the install, already had things backed up just in case, then ran a clean install. Clean install only took about 30 minutes, all drivers were installed properly except video. I had to d/l some windows updates right after install I think that included the video & all was well, haven't looked back since. :p

Has Gateway shipped W7 disks to anyone yet? Looking at the order status page for mine, next to "Order Status", there's a thick black line with nothing in it. It went from "Order Pending Fulfillment" to a blank. They aren't responding to any of my e-mails and I can't seem to find a phone number for Gateway's support.

I'm having the exact same issue. Glad to see it's not just me. I'm guessing they've gotten several thousands of emails about it, so maybe that's why I never got my "3 day response"..

Hmmm a month... Honestly that's not bad. My wife's sister recently bought a gateway and has no intention of upgrading to W7 so I'm getting her upgrade. I just hope they ship software that is not "model specific". I don't think it will be.

Installed Win 7 Ultimate full version as an upgrade over Vista 64 bit. Took roughly 4 hours with minor glitches but installed fine and runs like a champ. Visually it seems much faster. Receiving a few errors in viewer,(who doesn't?) but it doesn't seem to impact performance. I am not getting audio out the spdif port and a flash to the .17 bios from .12 did not help. I know that's been an issue on our laptops and I'll search the forum for the solution. No Conexant driver update seems to exist for our chipset specifically for Win 7.

I generally prefer clean installs of Windows but avoiding a reinstall of all programs was just too tempting. Good luck on your upgrades and if you have any questions please post.

    First off, GRATS :)

Did you receive this upgrade from gateway, or did you purchase it on your own?

i wonder what method they're using on sending out all these upgrades? Like are they going by the date you purchased your machine or aphebetically by name? So tedcr, when did you buy your machine (if it is an upgrade from Gateway)?

As a lark I responded to a SPAM from a site titled houseparty.com offering a free 'signature' version of Win 7 Ultimate if I 'hosted' a house party and did a demo of some sort to my guests. To my surprise I was selected and sure enough both a 32 bit and 64 bit version of Win 7 Ultimate showed up in a 'party pack' signed by Mr. Ballmer himself. What a kick :D. I went ahead and partied, did the demo and am now enjoying Ultimate.

Lucky for me, my NV5207u came with Windows 7 pre-installed. For those of you still waiting for your free upgrade, you're in for a little bit of a treat. From what I've seen so far, it runs faster than Vista did and installs quite fast as well.

I purchased my machine used about 9 months ago for a little less than $700. I thought that was a great deal at the time and still do. I won't be able to help you estimate your upgrade time. My Daughter bought a Dell a month ago and is still on their waiting list.
