i just hope that i will find heat pipes. 8800m GTS is rated 55w and 260M is 75W.

if i sell my old parts good i might go for quad core just because of gentoo.

I dont know if its really worth going from x9000 to qx9200.

Nice! <3 wistron & inventec codenames.

For the heatsinks, looks like the ones with short legs are better, for both CPU and GPU.

BTW, everyone who was sad when the FX series ended in favor of the NV series, check out this model KAYFO mobo:
Wholesale MB.B5602.001 (MBB5602001) intel integrated motherboard for acer gateway nv78 kayfo la 5021p rev:1.0

I found a parts machine locally, and I'm going to buy that motherboard... can't find the heatsinks anywhere, but that wont stop me from testing a GTX 460m in it. :D :D
If only it were compatible with the FX.

i believe i will order the motherboard tomorrow.

so excited to have the laptop back and start working on it. if i get some money back from old parts i might get also a quad core because of gentoo.

Hi guys, so by reading the OP and looking abit on google i got the impression that i can simply remove my old mobo and place the new one. I do not need to get new heatsinks and the X9100 will work straight away. Also, as far as i can see there are 2 HDD slots and the gfx is the 260m and the WUXGA screen will not fry.

Uh, did I say smth that is not true?

Damn that looks like a deal!

    Take care

Hmm why would the LCD fry? Maybe you know something I don't, but I see no reason why it would either.

Whatever heatsink you have will work and fit, just a matter of how well or badly. Most likely it wont be too bad, you can always modify it or try to increase airflow in your case.

i will do 3dmark 06 and vantage , crysis 1 and 2, i will see how what else i will have time to.

if i get some money from my old motherboard i might buy a quad core. i have to see because x9000 is very very fast cpu

ok its in greek but i ordered these rams :D

The quads are not worth it IMHO. The x9100 can over clock faster and unless the application you have specifically is tuned for quad core or sever multi treading the x9100 will overall perform better.

I have documented this in multiple threads here......................

He does rendering with linux and is into computer science I'm sure he could find a use for it :p

Quad cores help in dual threaded applications I've noticed, probably because of stuff running in the background.

for compiling in gentoo it will sure be faster, with 2 threads its going to be wayy much faster. as for gaming x9000 is very fast and in most cases.

i have to see if i can get a good deal and if the temps wont he high as in hell. my x9000 never goes above 60 or at max 65 when gaming.

if i stress it it will go about 70. its cool and it idles at 20-30 depending on room temp.

i have to see for quad core for now i need the boad and i hope it will work and fit well and tight ;P

    Heya,

Lum-X, about the rams, damn i though greece only exported feta cheese (me greek :p)

Are you using MPI or smth? I do, and it would be kinda cool to check scaling with 2 and 4 threads at home! Would you know if the CUDA cores in the 260m could be used for running MAGMA? I suspect only the newest fermi cards can do that.

I would like to see how did the upgrade go, since I pretty much want to do a similar thing.

Would you guys know if these new mobos have SATA III ?

    Cheers

as for greece, its in crysis mode :p
its my secoond year here and i really dont know a lot because i dont really care for politics.

yep i just made the order. :D
hope i will get it soon and i will post some benchs

Search the threads and you will find my posts on the CQD/C2D. Only in very specific and rare circumstances is a q9200 better than a x9100 both being overclocked. I am not about to go over this entire thing again. If you don't believe me just get whatever you want as I've already done the track work for all you guys........................

Ok everything is solved with verifications and everything. just have to wait for the payment to be done and wait until its shipped.
Hope i will get i fast and it will work without problems.

Again for gentoo i thinking about selling x9000 and get a quad core. when compiling 4 threads might be better than 2 if i can afford to keep the quad core cool.

as for gaming i dont want to care because the more i care the more i will play.

might be wrong thought and the heat its gonna melt the thing.

The original stock P78xx and P79xx with q9000 would frequently under high load clock the CPU to its lower speed (1600MHz) just too keep the temps down. Undervolting can eliminate this somewhat. With the q9200 and my mods I can run 3.06 GHz with prime 95 without overheating (just barely though). My default is 2.66 GHz with the system undervolted can run in full load at 75C or under.

Knowing what I know now I would not CQD the system. That and I am not a gamer as well either. The CQD's have their place over the C2D but only in rare specific circumstances............

Battlefield 3 is pretty new. There is info out there that it runs best on a core that supports 4 threads but remember the 2 L2's on a CQD are not shared as in the iCore cpu's share the large L3. Also where a CQD can be hard pushed to 3.2 GHz a x9100 can do 4 GHz.

Now if the 4 threads are affinity set to threads I can see where an advantage goes to the CQD. If the threads are forced to split between the cores the preformance hit of dual loading over the bus to the cores will negate having the extra cores at the slower overall speed.

The same can be true of any game or app. Since iCores use a shared cache there is no advantage, other than maybe some older intel and amd chips, for the programers to optimize for the independent cores rather than just the thread optimizations.

This is why Intel walked away from the CQD quitely. They were pushing multi thread but never advertised, as I have proven, the 10-25% thread performance hit where the non affinitized thread had to stretch between the two physical cores in a clock to clock comparison to a C2D.

If you want to see this take the old single thread SuperPI. 1m with no affinity and I get 16.505. Now with Core 0+1 as affinity I get 15.025 and that is 9.8% faster. with 2m I get 36.020 with affinity set and 41.215 without it, 14.4% faster with affinity set. These all @ 3.2 GHz.

Admitedly the best test though is to see how the game benches of the same system with the q9200 @32. GHz and then replaced x9100 @ 4.0 GHz. In any circumstance the 260m is a limitation to these newer games though. Essentially with these systems we are running on borrowed time as the graphics, and CPU, get out dated in both performance and tech.................

i might wait until Monday then i have to search somewhere else for a similar motherboard. I just want that 260m. i guess the seller does not have it in stock, the payment has been made to him but no respond from last Friday that i have mailed him.

It just sucks. I hope if he ships it will ship the proper motherboard not something stupid besides having good feedback especially for fast shipping.
I was looking at Ebay for the similar motherboard and they cost like 500$ compare to the one at AliExpress that is 190$. Ok the one at Ebay its brand new as the seller claims. Im gonna wait but i hope when the order is shipped if it is its gonna be the right one.

    so soo pissed off.

If i buy witch one to buy the 7908 or 7915 if i will or they are the same

Tell me is it worth paying extra money for about 2 times more for 260m instead of 9800m, i will keep mu x9000 for now as i dont see any real benifits spending more moeny for x9100 unless i sell the x9000 and buy the x9100.

what i was thinking is this 7805U that has a 55nm GPU or one of those 7908 or 7915.

Im really confused and i need the motherboard to fix the laptop because now its really hard when we have assinglemts everyweek and not having laptop to conitnue workking at home.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gateway-FX-...501105231?pt=Motherboards&hash=item1e6278d64f

im really confused and i dont know what to do as i need to order it ASAP

The 260m at stock clocks is 10% faster than the 9800m overclocked. A good 20% faster than a stock clocked 9800m. As to whether is is worth the extra money, that is up to you.

As mentioned cooling solutions may not be designed for this board and the case may be an issue. My other concern is the media bar and power button etc. You are delving into unknown territory here...........

The media bar is slightly different along with power button on the P68 to P78& P79 series. The daughter board for power, USB etc could have changed slightly as well. All I can say is good luck with it.

I would be more sure if I had a P68 to see up close and personal but I never give a personal recomendation unless I am pretty darn sure of it and here I am not. This is why I have a pretty good track record so far..............

So long as the old media bar and power button work then it may not be worth updating. I am just not sure of the connectors etc. The other issue may be the daughter board for both the power and the secondary USB. First and formaost is are they compatible and will the power board be ok with the power demands etc. Also since you had an AC issue I originally was unaware of is that board fried?

Yet another issue is the optical drive, are they the same interface? Most likely the monitor should not be an issue unless the ribbon location has changed between the old and new board. Again I don't have a P68xx to pull apart to look at.

Another user here had issues converting their P78xx to P79xx and you are going yet another further step away. I wish you all the luck in the world and I'll be here to help as much as I can. Remember the sound card is different so expectt some initial issues at the minimum.

My primary reason for doing the upgrade was system longevity. I have the 1920x1200 screen and wanted it to last as long as possible. To date the system is rock solid and slowed by nothing it encounters even at 2.66 GHz that I run normally. Punch it to 3.20 GHz and it flies with the Q9200. I had to extreme mod the cooling to get 3.0 and now 3.20 GHz stable but it was worth it in the end.

I still am tempted by the 2nd gen iCores power but the limit of 1080p screens keeps haunting me. I hate to think of it but I will probably go to a true desktop and have to use up all that extra electric for my next system.

I should note my P7805/P79xx hasn't left the desktop other than to do mods at all. Also it rarley gets turned off too, I've had it off over night only a couple of times.

A side note too, the other person who had issues with the P79 board also had a Razer USB mouse and headphone setup that he couldn't seem to get to work right.

The daughter board seems to be fine as i did send my laptop to a computer service. The AC is broken and the motherboard has resistance as he sad no the daughter board because as soon as he connected the motherboar to the daughter board the AC was turning off. The laptop does not turn on even on battery and he sad i changed some components in the motherboard but i could not get it fixed.

He also sad that because of the AC your motherboard is now fried.

I alos have the same reasons to go for a better motherboard system longevity so that i will keep the laptop longer and i was planing to keep it as long as i could because it was fast for me enough.

I will see if the mix will work this or next week and if not i will try to make if work at all costs and as long as CPU will BOOT with the motherboard x9000 and its OK and not fried.

Do you know the thread of the guy that tried to convert 78xx to 79xx and as for sound card its gonna be ok as long as there wont be a lot to mod and do stuff with wires just to make the system turn on.

Since you say i need the laptop P-6860 to see what can i do in order to help you with that.

TAN do you have a thread about your laptop mod.

I was a convert and he attempted the same. Had a long bout with USB compatability and eventually gave up. I have only issues with some port. It appears the bottom left port is under powered and my USB powered hub disconnects intermitently. I avoid this by using the top left for the USB hub.

His issue primarily was the Razer mouse and Razer Surround Sound USB Headset. It seemed the more he did to cure his issues the further he ran into problems. To state again those issues never cropped up here.

I have many threads on the subject here. None with pics really though. The disassembly thread here covers that and otherwise it is straight forward. Not seeing part numbers nor pics of the HeatSinks and connections of a P68xx board concerns me. I would never make a statement something is compatible without seeing it first, no matter what logic dictates should be.

If I were to give it as a probability I'd say a good 95% or better all should be fine except possible other undiagnosed issues from not having a good motherboard to test the components.................

I will see, i belie that i will get the motherboard on Friday and the worst thing is that this weekend i have a competition so i wont have a lot of time to mess up. I will take pics with from my cellphone but i don't have a camera so i will try to find one and mod it and make a guide( lets see how much time i have because now its hell before Christmas break here at university with all the work that they give to us).

I just hope that i will turn on and BOOT without problem because i bought the rams and a new universal 120w AC. I believe that I will have issues but we can fix them and if i have problems i will go and buy the daughter board for Packard Bell iPower or whatever is needed because im going to keep this system as long as i can is simple i just love this laptop and i don't want to change it.

if i get some money i might change the screen to a good WUXGA because when i code its just hell when your read the code sometimes and the CPU to X9100 if i sell the X9000 for like 150% + shipping and im gonna do my best to make it work as perfect as i can.

TAN what have you dont for the cooling solution.

I got the tracking number. I hope untill the end of the week i will get the motherboard.

I might sell the x9000 because i think i got a buyer. If i sell it for about 150-180$ i will go for x9100 jsut to unlock the FSB and whatever is in there.

The screen is also en option if i find one for a good price as i found some for uner 100$ :p.
The screen that the laptop now has is just bad and when i code and i have the optup on console on the the other side i have the file browser or whatever i just cant reed the code without scrolling 1000 times :S taht just the thing that i dont like.

You do not get an unlocked FSB. The CPU's FSB would run correctly. Your present FSB is 800 and the new CPU would put it at 1033. TS will overclock the multiplier and alow voltage change to any Xtreme CPU............

I just got the motherboar but im at uni for another 3 hours so i will have to wait an see if it will turn on. the only 2 diferences that i saw are the cdrom( it looks like the sata connector just smaller) port is different and there is no way to conned the power button because there is no connector but there is the place if i want to solder it. I belive i can power it up with the media button as i can do it with the other gateways. :D

    The rest looks the same.

    i will post pictures.

OK so the motherboard is working, windows did not book but Gentoo linux booted with a lot of errors.

I had some bus errors on post boot but i hope they will be gone after CMOS battery is charged. :D

the only thing that im pissed of is that the connector for the power button is missing. I can turn the laptop on with the media button that looks like an arrow but to have a power button would be nice so i have to think for a fix. As for the CD room its ok for now :p at least a have a working laptop.

now with ddr3 and 8 gigs gentoo seems smoother and x9000 is working great.

im just worried now for the errors that i got at post. i will post more.
    for now CPu temps are 31 CPU0 41 CPU1, GPU 40-45, ACPI0 41 and 45 ACPI1, I hav a thermal pad on the CHIPSET and IDC7 on gpu and cpu :D

    thanks boys :D

O2 micro is the card reader..........

Edit; Windows at minimum is going to think you have a new computer and will need to reactivate. I went from the P7805 to the P79xx and had to reactivatte and the sound card is different. Are the original drives SATA achi? this with windows can cause huge issues trying to boot up.

Also I already was PM45 you have come from a 945 chipset............

i did format the PC. the windows is booting fine but i also have those Resource Conflict at POST and i have to press F1. and yes it took me like 1.5houts to install windows but now its booting fast. i guess there is a faulty device and i ether need to remove it(disconnect it from the motherboard) fix it somehow.

and yes i had to format PC with USB :p

The rest is working ok and it looks faster then the previous system.

Also the bios sucks, it just have option to enable disable network boot, usb legacy sata compatibility and something else that i cant remember now since im at uni. OK also hdd password and save load default. I am thinking trying to update to gateway bios.

there is another issue the gpu fan wont kick in until the gpu goes like 80C then its at 100% until the gpu goes down to 45C. it sucks. I will post tonight info's from everest

Upps something went wrong with the internet at school i could not see m previous post so i double posted in a way.

Yes i did instal the drivers but its the same. i get error code

for the broken PIC device i get

and for IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers

all of them share the same PCI bus 13, device 6, except for the function.

the SD controller is now fine after i installed the drivers but i still get the error at POST for resource conflict.

I played some skyrim and my temps ware 85. i dont know how good is that.

i will do this weekend a PC mark test and crysis benchmarks so that we will see the difference between x9000 and x9100 :p

now i get it about GPU temps. the fan wont kick until it reaches 85C then the temps will drop to 75-70. i just logged the GPU-Z and i will do so for every game to to make some charts in excel .

here is the vintage bench. http://3dmark.com/3dmv/3711835
