Looking at the price on this one (old), it seems the 1399 price tag would have made it the best bang for the buck?

Where's the links to the new ones?

By the way...what's the difference between it (this one) and the 68xx series?

If you looked at the article again, you will notice that 1,399 refers to the 172S, the 172X retailed for 1,999, but you could get it cheaper. Same applies to the 172S.

    6860 = 1440 x 900, 4GB RAM, 320GB 5400 RPM, Vista 64/32, T5550
    6831 = 1440 x 900, 3GB RAM, 250GB 5400 RPM, Vista 32, T5450 or T5550 (depending on when you bought it)

    New 7811 = 1920 x 1200, 4GB DDR3, 200GB 7200RPM, Vista 64 (specs not confirmed yet)

Here’s how I came across this notebook. I was at Best Buy with my brother, and he fell in love with the 6860. I myself thought the notebook looked great! Well…my mother said since I’m getting the M570RU, I should look into the 6860 for him. I’m trying to get him the best bang for the buck 6860 (wanting better display), and since this notebook looks exactly like the one he thinks he’s getting I’m going to tell my mom to get this one…unless you guys who have this notebook tell me something I should know, that will persuade me to get the 6860 at Best Buy?

Going by what you just said, that might be the answer I was looking for.

Wait. If you want the to get him the 172X, consider the 173X FX or 173XL.

I would advise waiting for the 7811FX and see how that turns out first though.

This is hard to explain, without me sounding selfish. My little brother thinks he should get everything I get, and I don’t. My mom got me a desktop, 1 month later he got the same one. I’m getting a laptop for school, now he says he needs a new one (he’s 12 years old mind you). I’m sorry; I don’t want him to have a better laptop than mine, but a good one none the less. I told him he can have my D810, little xxxxxxx started whining! So I just went to Best Buy to find something new, and the 6860 definitely caught my eye. I think it will be perfect for him, and I can still have somewhat of an upper hand on him. When we got identical desktops, I made sure mine had something else added as an extra. Don’t flame me, but an older brother should get first dibs. :)

Wow dtwn83, thanks for those links!!!!!!

lol, well, being 12, I don't really think he needs a brand new laptop. I would consider going to Best Buys near your place and look for a P6860FX going on clearance. With the new series coming in, most Best Buys are probably going to put the 6XXX FX series on clearance.

And yes, you do sound somewhat selfish :p. I'm more disinclined with a 12 year old needing a 17" gaming laptop though. You could buy the little **** a desktop that would outperform the FX by a fair bit.

Selfish?? Sounds more like a spoiled brat. My 12 year old brother is fine with my old iBook G3.

Get him a Asus EEE and tell him to GTFO

I'm going to try and show my mom this, without her seeing the other stuff, expecially the stuff I typed! :D

Since we do go to the same LAN gigs sometimes, it’s nice to see both of us will rock on Quake 3 2 vs. 2 now…as if we all ready didn’t. :p Yeah I know, that game will fly without the need for such computers, but there are other games.

Wow. He does sound spoiled. Next time he whines, punch him in the balls until he passes out, then throw the D810 at him and say "THIS IS WHAT YOU GET, DEAL WITH IT"

    ...or not. Whichever.

Ok, but seriously, I'm with dtwn on this. I really don't think a 12 year old needs a $1400 laptop. Where, exactly does your mother stand on this? Does she think you two should have everything equal?

Liquid. Getting ready to throw down on a 173XL. What is this about a new machine with 9800 GPU and DDR3 RAM? Links and model # would be helpful as I am ready to pull the trigger. Thanks!

You might also want to inform your mother than the Gateway weighs about 10 pounds. Not exactly the most fun for a 12 year old to be carrying around.

Yea, not to mention its not exactly the most robust laptop in the world. I can imagine how long it'll last in the hands of a 12 YO.

So you don’t think it would be cool to pack it up in a backpack, and hit the trails with? I know him, and I know that’s exactly what he’ll be doing. Heck, I do it too! I like to ride around the lake for a few laps, then sit in the park and use my computer. He likes to be destructive, and I can see that laptop not working after a few of his adventures.

Not to sound like a prick or anything, but what determines you having something better then your brother? I mean I'm already dumbfounded at the idea of buying a new gaming laptop for a 12 year old kid, yet both of you will have sweet gaming laptops and Im assuming have decent gaming desktops all from your brother whining? Had I done something like this my parents would have knocked me silly. Either your parents need to grow a backbone and realize children dont need so much expensive stuff or there is alot of over privileged stuff going on in your house. Now if you actually bought that rig yourself through your hard work then by all means disregard any comments about you. But damn, you guys have better stuff then a college educated adult with a good job(Me)...

When I was 12, I didn't even have a computer what-so-ever. Mind you, this was '91, and I don't really know if there were computers around, but I sure didn't have one.

And I don't think I could recommend a 12 year old owning a laptop. Especially one with such a high value. Couldn't your mother just... tell him no?

I built my first PC in 1992 and I saved birthday money, Christmas money, chore money ($5 a week), and whatever my 9 year old hands could get to build a 80286 computer (was already very old by then). It was the greatest thing ever.

Wow, build computers at 9! Your parents knew your career of choice!

In 92, I was either 12 or 13, and more interested in being a "garage-band rocker" than anything else. Nirvana had surfaced, and I was in love with the idea of being a flannel-toting, boot-wearing rocker.

Computers came in around '01 for me.

Lol yeah wasnt my parents. My uncle was an electrician and loved computers so he sold me the parts that he had lying around and "supervised" me while I assembled it, and back then dip switches and jumpers galore were pretty cornfusing. Sadly that was that last PC I built for myself til 2000, I was and am still and avid laptop user. But my love for PC building had me building and designing PCs for a foundation in my school as well as for the Comp sci department at my high school.

As for the flannel wearing doc martins I was apart of that crowd around 94. Sadly the year that ended nirvana, but hey we still had pearl jam and such.

Oh man, we did have Pearl Jam... and no one rocked the Doc's more than Eddie Vedder! I still remember watching the premier of Nirvana Unplugged, then seeing it comes across MTV Update that Cobain died.

I'm not much of a Nirvana fan anymore, but it shook us back then.

Lol yeah now teens are a totally different version of worthless....well most are, there are quite a few that are good. It seems like entitlement and the world owes me whatever I want and need is the popular attitude of teens these days.

+Rep for realism man. You seen the teens now, and they went from 0 to -5. When we were teens, parents treated us differently, along with authority. Schools instilled authority on us, not the other way around. Now teenagers wear their $200 Polo's and $100 jeans, driving brand new cars, without the knowledge of what a "real world earning" is.

It's sad, but it's good to see that others recognize this plague too.

Like you said, there are the few good ones out there, and when you see them, it feels good. But they are so few and far between, it's absurd.

As for the OP, I would say just tell your mom your brother is 12! He needs to be focusing on school, activities with friends, and just being a kid. Not being surrounded by high-dollar equipment. I don't think a 12 year old understands the responsibilities of owning fine products.

No offense intended. Just going by what I see in teens/kids today, on top of seeing my two teenage brothers and how they act.

My wife did a sub teacher job at a wealthier area when she was still in school and she saw kids with $500+ phones in the 2nd grade. Parents are starting their kids off young with the mentality of entitlement and in turn they never know the value of a dollar. Its sad that kids are running around with better cars, gadgets and clothes then I am and Im a college graduate with a good job. I also live in a two income home with no children. Wow the world, well America, certainly has changed in the past 10 years.

Amen to that. Parents are so afraid of "depriving" their kids, they instill no morals, ethics, or earnest means in them.

For the most part. Again, there are exceptions.
