You didn't say what OS you were installing. Doesn't Win 7 install generic SATA drivers? What was your problem?

I would like to install any OS
I have tried Vista, XP and Win7.It came with Vista. As I understand this is one of the few machines that uses a SATA driver not in the MS standard editons. So far without the restore disks generated by the computer it is not working.
Gateway has a SIL Sata driver listed but it is not listed as a good driver when the windows installer ask to "load" a driver.
Would love to find a set of real restore DVD's -
You mentioned W7, it may be easier to use the USB method. You will need a 4G stick and MS usb tool.
You will have to call Bill and fork over the upgrade money. I assume, love that word, that your restore partition is history and you don't have a retail W7 disk? -
I have tried XP, Vista and Windows 7. As there is no SATA driver for whatever chip it is none of these will install saying needs driver for the HD. The HD is fine as I connected it to another computer and was able to install an OS.
Keep those suggestions coming

Per gateway support is the intel SATA ACHI driver needed so windows 7 should have no issue.

I got that error, last month, when doing a dry run on my Toshiba but not on my Asus which does not have DVD drive. I use the USB method, so I had to go back into BIOS and boot from USB..problem gone. Note that this was W7 to W7, no upgrade, just clean install. Also, I had problems due to bad drive format.
I have not tried W7 on my old FX, so interested if driver from Tanware or other works for you. -
[1] Put the sata drivers on a USB stick.
[2] Reboot into Disk
[3] Profit.
As long as your sata drivers are somewhere the computer can look they will work. I had to do this to reinstall Windows 7 at one point when they wouldn't read from my disk. It's a lot simpler then making a bootable USB driver. -
The model I am working with is P6318U different than the model you mentioned. Mine is:
Gateway Support - P-6318u Gateway P-6318u Notebook
but the link to the drivers is broken. I tried a retail version of XP, Vista and Win 7 and none have the SATA driver required. This unit requires a SI3531 driver which I have found, I am thinking I may need to purchase a retail Vista and slipstream the driver.
ANy more suggestions? -
There is in the link I provided a SATA driver and it saves fine here. For the ACHI there is an intel driver..............
