I'm trying to upgrade my cpu from a t5550 to either a t9500, or t9800. I can't get the laptop to post with either one. My bios is 94.28. Any ideas?

Its the FBS speed, you need a CPU with 667Mhz FSB, T9500 has 800Mhz FSB and T9800 has 1066Mhz FSB, so they wont work, maybe with some FSB pin modding.

It seems that this laptop use PM965 chipset so it should be able to use 200MHz FSB (800MHz) cpu without the problem. So T9800 is no go but T9500 should work. The reason it not work might be because 1. it's damage, you have to check it in different laptop or 2. lack of support in bios maybe?
I've seen that there was another, later version of the bios floating around the internet which was from Wistron who produced the motherboard itself. It was 94.31 version.

Finding it right now seems impossible thought. Unles you will find someone with your laptop who could share it wit you.
T9500 should work cos I've sen post about that particular update.
On the other hand it looks like T9300 has been upgraded without problems even on 94.28. -
So I tried both the T9500 and T9800 in a Dell 1545 that i had lying around, and the T9800 worked fine on that one, but the T9500 wouldn't post either. I came to the conclusion that the T9500 must be DOA, so i sent it back. I read that others were using the T9500, and even the x9000 on their gateway P-6831FX as well, so at the very least the T9500 should work. I also saw that post about the 94.31 bios, and I've been searching everywhere for it with no luck. Maybe that bios is needed to get the T9500 to work. I'll try and grab another T9500, and see if i can get it to work, if not i guess I'll look for a T9300.. Thanks guys for the input.

Sounds like you got a lemon with the T9500. I'm skeptical that the Dell 1545 is a valid test case for compatibility with the P6831, however; if the 1545 can use the T9800, that indicates it's part of the Montevina platform and not the Santa Rosa platform the P6831 belongs to, or the Santa Rosa Refresh platform that the T9300, T9500, and X9000 belong to.
The T9300 should also work, as should the X9000 and T9500. Alternately, and in the event that there's a BIOS incompatibility with the newer Penryn Santa Rosa Refresh chips, you could still get a considerable boost by going with the higher end of the original Santa Rosa chips - the T7700 (2.4 GHz), T7800 or X7800 (2.6 GHz), or X7900 (2.8 GHz). I suspect the newer 9000 series ones I mentioned in this paragraph - but not any others such as the T9400/T9600/T9800 - will work, lemons exempted, but as I can't personally vouch for BIOS compatibility on the P6831.
The downside of the 7000-series upgrades is that they consume more power, have 4 MB instead of 6 MB of L2 cache (although that would still be an upgrade from 2 MB in the T5550), and generate more heat; the upside is they may be cheaper (though the difference is likely very small these days, possibly exempting the X9000).
The X7800, X7900, and X9000 can also be overclocked with the right software (I think I used ThrottleStop, though possibly RM CPU Clock Utility), if you have adequate cooling. The "if" is a big question, however. Perhaps the P6831 has better cooling than my Dell, but I was only able to hit the stock 2.8 GHz on the X7900. With one core disabled in the BIOS, I could hit 3.2 GHz, and perhaps I could have hit that on both if I had increased the voltage, but the temperatures wouldn't allow that. The X9000 should allow slightly more given the same cooling, but I wouldn't bet on more than 1 or 2 multipliers (200-400 MHz).
Point being, you should be able to hit 2.5/2.6 GHz with a T9300, T9500, or T7800 without too much difficulty, which would be a major upgrade. 2.8 GHz or higher is much more dependent on cooling, though it would be interesting to see if the Gateway has the cooling to handle it.
