Should I get it now or wait for the new one? It is so compelling.. I dont really need a lappy till july... But I dont know how much better of a deal I will get waiting a couple more months.

 

I have both mdels the P-6831FX and the P-171X FX, they are both great machines, the screen on the P-171X FX does look better, but I have not tweaked the P-6831FX screen settings yet, does anyone have good setting to share?

I have all the games I want except COD4. The thing is my parents are paying for it since it is going to be for college. I know they will spend that much cuz my dad was talking bout the 1600 dollar t61 that clemson offers. It is just I dont know if I can convince him to get this now.. I will try though, hopefully i will be in the club soon.

 

The price guarantee is only 14 days on laptops. The website says, if it is "within 30 days of the shipping, scheduled delivery or pickup date (14 days for desktop PCs, notebooks, monitors, printers, camcorders and radar detectors...then we'll refund 100% of the price difference, tax included."

I ordered mine on the 12th, it shipped on the 13th, and i received it on the 14th. So hopefully I can get a refund. After sitting on hold for a while, the woman didn't know what she was talking about and couldn't even tell me for sure whether my dates qualify for a refund. She tells me that all price matches are 30 day windows as I'm staring at the website where it says 14 days for laptops and quoting it to her. She just sounded confused and said that was only for returns.

She just took my info and forwarded it to the credit department since they handle refunds. They should email me within 24-48 hours. Anyone who bought one within 14 days should call and get their money refunded. It's not much hassle and is worth the hundred bucks.

 

Well, I just got back from Best Buy, and I am amazed with mine. A few notes:

1. I don't know what in the world everyone is complaining about as far as the screen goes. It has decent viewing angle, and more importantly its color calibration is not off and it does not have any graininess at all. If only Dell could put such a nice display in their systems!

2. I got the T5550. CPU-Z clocks it at 1.83ghz, even though device manager claims I have a T5450.. gateway must be using an outdated system image.

3. I think I will try Windows XP on this first, and then maybe settle on Vista if the driver compatibility is just too bad.

 

I called before and asked them and they said just bring in the receipt. Granted I did buy it last night.

 

Wow, quick response from BB. Not 5 minutes after getting off the phone with clueless customer service girl, I got an email saying $104.23 has been placed back on my credit card. Awesome.

First I was jealous of this sale, but now that I'm included in it, I'm happy.

Tempted to call in sick tomorrow so I can play with my new toy......I have my PS3/360 for gaming but will be hooking up the lappie to my 720p projector running a 120" screen everytime I'm upstairs in my game-room.....I guess Crysis will look good on a 120" screen

I bought my laptop last week, went back today to get $100 back. Great laptop, BUY IT. You have two weeks if the price drops again (I doubt it)

I love this laptop.

 

Ladies......picked it up tonight after having them do a PM to the online price.

It was almost 9pm when i walked out in the BB parking lot with my precious purchase so i made sure i wasn't gonna become a late-night laptop burglar victim

Anyway reached home safely and decided I was too tired to open it up since i have work tomorrow morning at 6am....

Call me crazy.......I woke up at 1am this morning and crawled quietly out of bed, without wakng my significant other and went downstairs to my kitchen where I put the lappie.......

Opened it up and slid the lappie out of the box....my life was going in slo-mo during that time .....this is a VERY NICE LOOKING LAPTOP for $1250 .

Keyboard and trackpad feel solid (wasn't expecting that from a Gateway product). Here's the good part.....other than the bad viewing angles, I dont have any issue/complaint with the screen. To me, its wonderful and in low light, very clear and appealing to the eyes.

Windows Vista install took about 10 mins and after finding my WEP key, I connected to my wi-fi....another surprise there. The wi-fi appears to be very fast and solid compared to my work laptop (Dell D610 with Intel PRo).

Vista picked up the updates automatically and the next thing I know, I'm looking at the SP1 legal agreement .....by this time, I was really tired and thought I'd grab some hours before waking up again at 5:30am for work so I left it there. Did run Decrapifier and uninstalled the bloatware and so far, Vista is running like a champ.

Some latenight photos with my old Cybershot ...the desktop screenshot is very clear and crisp unlike the pic here and thats cos of my camera's low light limitation.

Overall, I'm 95% happy with the FX.....dont see the need to upgrade the CPU at this point so I'm sticking to the stocks for now. BTW, Windows is seeing my CPU as 1.866GHz Dual Core and not 1.66 per the specs Will be hooking this up to my DLP Projector tonight projecting to a 120" screen.

I think the newer batches all the newer replaced CPU. Mine has 1.866 too instead of the 1.66.

SWEET! The one real issue I have with this is the low end CPU. Granted 1.86GHz isn't exactly blazing either, but it somehow feels much more reasonable, and clearly makes this the laptop to beat (if it doesn't develop some strange problem).

 

Nice. In that case, the only difference between the newer batch and the refresh is 4GB of RAM vs 3GB and the 320GB vs 250GB HDD.

 

What's this newer batch about? Is that just the same thing-that they've snuck in higher specs without "telling" us?

 

the guy at bb said ONLY change was 4gigs of ram and said same processor and hard drive and so on. Also said would be 100 more.

The ones currently at bestbuy got the 1.8ghz proc instead of 1.6 and the refresh coming sometime in april is supposed to also have the 1.8 proc.

 

And that includes on the website I assume?

This makes it the same price as the Toshiba x205, except with double the graphics hardware...and a real OS CD

 

Typically they run about 2 weeks sometimes only a week. The lasst time the sale occured they ran out of stock in the first few days.

[UPDATE]

Did a temporary hookup on my 1 day old FX to my 768p PJ .....Vista picked it immediately and automatcially down-scaled to match the native res of 1280X768. Got a pixel to pixel match with no black borders or anything......it was actually quite a trip to surf and play the Crysis demo on my 120" screen from 8 feet away!

Still need to order a HDMI switchbox and another HDMI cable so I can do a permanent setup. Will be ordering those from Monoprice tonight.

Also followed the Vista Tweak on NBR and both shutdown/start up OS times are a lot faster now.

Still find some things little frustrating but thats related to the OS and not to this lappie.

I'll post some pictures of my lappie driving my PJ setup once I have a perm setup.

I felt the same way after hooking mine to my 61" TV.....the first time I played Bioshock on the bigscreen was an experience. Looking for a good bluetooth keyboard and mouse now so I can sit back and surf on the couch.

As far as the folding....um....it folds ok LOL never thought of that being a selling point.

Edit: Aaaaah "folding" ok, I get it LOL no, haven't tried yet.

 

so this "new batch" is coming out in april? Meaning i should probably just wait till then to buy right? I mean $100 cant get you an additional gig of ram + extra 80gb .. And its probably safe to say they might ship with x64 in order for the 4 gb ram to be utilized?

 

I just purchased this machine as well on the 25th of March. I guess I'll be hitting Best Buy tomorrow to get the $100 back. This makes this unit one hell of a deal.

I guess I got the revised version as well since mine had a 1.86 in it as well as opposed to the 1.67 (T5450) listed on the box.

As soon as I got it, I installed two Hitachi 7200 RPM 200 gig drives in a RAID 0. I also had Newegg overnight me a T9300 processor and I installed 4 gigs of RAM. A clean install of Vista Ultimate 64-bit and I was off.

One thing I noted during the upgrade process was that the 1.67 (T5450) and 1.86 (T5550) processors ran on a 667 Mhz FSB. The new T9300 runs on a 800 MHz bus. The GM965 chipset on this particular board supports 800 MHz FSB. The bus increase dramatically increased my Windows Experience Index of 4.7 to 5.1. I know this is not increased due to the additional 1 gig of RAM as I have added more of the same speed memory to other systems with no impact on the Index. I do know the increased memory speed does affect the Index.

Anyways, I have attached the new updated Windows Experience Index without any type of overclocking at all.

 

AFAIK the GM965 chipset will never run 800mhz bus for the mobile market but those are some awsome upgrades congrats.

 

The FX uses the PM965 chipset, and it does indeed run at 800mhz fsb when the processor supports it.

It seems kind of strange to me that the Penryn 2.5Ghz get that poor a Windows Experience rating. Even my E2140 on my desktop overclocked to 2.66Ghz easily gets a 5.9, so you would think that these Penryn processors would be a 5.7 or 5.8...

 

ya i didnt mean it wont run the proc at 800mhz but the ram will always be at 667 no matter what the case may be .
