Was given this laptop, and can't quite figure out the problem.

I turn it on, and all the lights come on. The HD light starts blinking, and the backlight for the screen comes on, but it remains black. I can adjust the brightness, but there's no picture. I tried plugging in a vga monitor, and there was no output there. I tried searching, and it looks like Nvidia produced a problematic GPU. However, there are also people claiming that this signals the need for a new LCD. I'm wondering if it's also possible that the lcd cable just came loose. I'd like to get some feedback before I dive into actually disassembling the thing.

Also, if it is the gpu, what slot/socket type does it use? Do you have a recommended replacement?

The GPU is soldered to the board. The options are to reflow it, AKA baking, or have it reballed. The later can be a permanent fix where a reflow is only temporary. Another option is the P79 main board but there are issues as well. These can be searched out through the many posts here on the subject.........
