Hey everyone
has anyone had this problem?
the laptop just turns off mid game like i just unplugged it and pulled the battery out (no blue screen or anything just a sudden powerdown).
i have 8800M GTS and the 1.83 GHz T5550 in it at the moment.
i can't figure out what it is i've checked the temperatures while playing with speedfan and they don't get very high (though the log erases when it shuts down so i don't know the temp just before). i also updated my driver to 196.34 but no change.
plus it only happens with mass effect.
tested dragon age and spellforce since the clean install so far, but crysis, frycry 2 etc. worked flawlessly when i had them installed.
thanks for the help.

did you try cleaning out the air vents by blowing compressed air into them? - worth a shot, easy fix anyway.
-
actually when do GPUs typically fail, mine was getting to around 95 C max averaging around 90C though
CPUs around 70C -
It could be the cpu hitting the max temp and shutting down, or the gpu. I recommend cleaning out your vents with compressed air and or getting a nice laptop cooler.

It seems that your reaching max temps on the GPU my laptop did the same thing clean out the vents and replace the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU with IC Diamond 7 and you should see it run smoother.......

cleaning always helps so much... its amazing. I was playing wow on my 6860 after about 8 months or so without cleaning it and the temps were at 95 or so for the gpu and it'd just shutdown the laptop. Silly me didn't think about cleaning it...
So I went out and bought a can of air and sprayed it into the vents and watched the dust fall out and then started it up and it ran at about 45 degrees while playing wow. wooooo 5 dollar repair!
Come to think of it, I need to do that again, temps are getting a bit high for my tastes.Good luck!

Since the laptop shuts down by itself you wouldn't have noticed the temps at that particular moment. It certainly has to do with it getting hot.

I used to have a P173x fx, it seems gateway's laptops have that particular issue (I dont know...). clean it, blow some air in it. but don't do it in front of people, they will mock you lol.
mine did, and they were amazed to see the result.
