I am about to purchase this laptop and just wondering if anyone has this laptop and can let me know how it runs. We don't have Gateway's in New Zealand and can this not ask a friend.
Specs of Gateway P-7805U FX
x9100 CPU,
Nvidia 9800 GTS,
1900x1200WUXGA,
Raid0 320GB hard drive (2x320GB 7200rpm), 4GB DDR
How would this compare to the Dell Studio XPS 16 with specs:
512MB Radeon,
T9900 CPU,
500GB 7200rpm,
4GB DDR3
im a dell fan but tooo expensive these days
I am purchasing it off ebay for around $1700USD ... is that a good price for the Gateway laptop?
Also I should mention I am a linux user and thus I like the idea of Nvidia more than the ATI, simply because of driver support.

The 9800m GTS stomps anything dell has to offer in the studio line-up, at least twice as powerful, possibly three times, the dells look nice and have the led screens but thats about all thats going for them.

Its a great laptop, probably a bit more powerful than the Dell, but the price is a bit high (in my opinion)
Honestly it should only cost about 1300 for the upgrades listed.
So i'm not sure what you should do though, having to have it shipped to NZ I cant really say if its a good deal for you or not -
well if you think about it, $1200 for the laptop, depending on whether its an ES CPU or not and hes trying to make some profit, plus the fact that it is for sure going to be WUXGA unlike some of them (maybe just the 7811s?) so its higher but not really high.
If your in NZ though I dont think you really have the greatest selection. -

Yeah i suppose if its a new in box laptop that was just upgraded/tested and then put back in the box it could be worth more (i keep forgetting people making profits... i just sell old laptops for upgrades for the new ones

Sorry I didn't read it right the first time and see you're from NZ. Still, if you can find that ASUS, get it.

ASUS has stolen Gateway's "Bang-for-the-buck" crown.
Don't worry about the bad reviews, a BIOS update fixes the problem some had. -
I really want a laptop around th 3ghz range... In NZ dell is only selling max t9800... the x9100 and t9900 hasn't become available here yet and if you can find one... its priced rediculously
I just need something powerful and the shipping should not be too expensive.
This one is listed here
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110418118618&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
thus all up it will cost me around $1830USD inclusive of shipping -
I cannot seem to open the ASUS link... do you have a model #?

that sound like a good deal to me. keeps it fair price with reasonable profit for seller. i think a 7805u retail for $1100 ish w/sales tax+ x9100 Es cpu $320 + wuxga screen $150+ additional hdd $99= total $1670 not including any shipping on the parts i think you found a decent deal if the laptop is not heavily used or at least in great shape.
with all that said i would ask seller to provide some photos of the actual product you will buying and whether the x9100 is an es cpu or not (most likely is at that price) but ask if the cpu is e0 or c0 stepping(if it is an ES chip). are both the hdd the same drive (brand, rpm speed, cache, etc.) basically pretend your buying a car and find simple questions to ask about it. nothing is too dumb to ask. hell make sure you ask what kind of thermal compound was used when the cpu was replaced and if it was used on the northbridge also? some people say im being to cautious when i purchase stuff but you never know what the seller is trying to do.(ive heard too many horror stories of uninformed people buying stolen goods lol)
usually a reputable seller will answer the questions without hesitation. its the shady ones that start to get nervous when you ask too much -
Hi guys,
Since I am the seller and there are some questions, I just wanted to jump in and respond to some of the questions:
1. The CPU is a QS QHBQ with E0 stepping.
2. The HDDs are identical.
3. I use ICD7 in all of my upgrades
4. The base system is a refurb but there are no dents, scratches, dead pixels, stuck pixels etc. Even the GOW sticker is still on.
5. I kept the blue pad for the north bridge since nothing else seems to work better than that.
I didn;t want to comment on this thread to allow the OP to decide by himself but since there are some questions, I wanted to clarify couple things.
Thanks -
Oh you got nothing to worry about then, alitunay has been here for a while, sells a lot of laptops, should be just fine.

Yeah, FWIW, based on the way I"ve seen Alitunay conduct himself here on this board, I would not hesitate to purchase a PC from him on eBay.
-
lol... all good then... i guess i have nothing to worry about... my first international transaction and first non-dell system
Will keep all posted on when I receive it and will post a link to a "a Fedora 11 and Gateway P-7805U FX how to" -
