They might support quad core, Its in the Gateway section, maybe a bios update might be needed for that, I dont think they get all that hot from the reviews I seen, as for battery life, I dont expect much due to the specs.
Sad part I spent over 3 grand today on 3 laptops and dont have one yet..lol. I am excited though..

    you got 4 of them?!

I'm actually half tempted to just buy another few and sell them to people at school who are getting laptops for college (like save their butts from the horror that is bestbuy) (meaning no mark-up, because i am a nice guy)

    :p :p :p

I run GTA IV with Overclock GPU @ 720core, 950mem, 1750shader at 68 degrees avg. As far as battery goes, I was once playing wc3 online and forgot to plug in the power cord. I went on for over 2 hours before it went off. Amazing as I was running on high performance overclocked :_)

I ordered one this afternoon, so I have my fingers crossed that it is problem free. At worst I can just return it, so I figured why not take a shot. $680 was just too good to pass up.

    i paid $700 because i hesitated :(

and yea, i rally hope it's problem free too!

If not, i still have the 30 day thing (well, then again, if it's out of stock, arn't i just screwed and have to send it to gateway?)

EDIT: apparently no return policy, unless i refuse the package (which if you read the fine print, it says don't let the courior leave until you inspect your product, but it also goes to say that any open product can't be returned) xD

They'll have another shipment in on May 4th, so you might be in luck if the laptop isn't working properly.

Will BestBuy sell this model? If so when?
I would like to get my hands on this system and compare it to my "old" 6831-FX.
It's too bad they use the same design and colors, this laptop badly needs a makover.

Bestbuy sells the new model while tigerdirect sells the refurbished model. I bought refurbs from tigerdirect before some were good while others were problems, just keep your fingers crossed. The sales person I spoke to last night said there is a large shipment coming in on May 4th, Thats like 6 days away. For those who missed out wait til the 4th and jump on it right away. I should get my 2 Thursday. I will let you know what shape there in. Thanks.

My "sticky tongue emoticon" is bigger than yours!
I'm a bit concerned with the "overheating" problems I've read about on the P7811.

Also out of curiosity, I was wondering if anyone knows what BRAND of hard drive comes with the P7805u and the P7811. I'd like to run Raid 0/1 and would like to purchase an identical drive, instead of buying 2 new HDs. Does it really matter if I am running Raid with two different HD's as long as they have same speed and capacity?

From my desktop experience, don't run Raid, way too many issues with data loss!

EDIT: and it looks like tiger direct ships from Illlinois (and i'm in WI) so mine should be here tomorrow or thurs day

EDIT 2: I really wish there was a way i could pay bestbuy to warrant my new laptop! Their warranty = amazing! :p (i know a guy who had a laptop for 2 years, wanted a new one, walked into the store, said he was having internet problems, 'accidentally' dropped it and cracked the screen.... new laptop)

Isn't Raid 1 one solution to data loss?. Of course I'll be buying an external drive, and that's why I didn't want to waste more $$$ on 2 internals.

That guys is one lucky bum. Did he have the accidental warranty? Or Geeksquad BlackTie

if they put the p-7811 fx on sale i would still get the p-7805u since it has more ddr3 memory and it has a better hdd...

i heard some issues about the overheating problem too so that one more reason to get the p-7805u

the only bad thing is that they have worse res screen but that is just 150 bucks more on ebay :)

What ever the top-teir one is
and i'm actually tempted to do this on mine, that new screen would be really nice

idk how the quality is of ebay screens though, nor the simplicity of taking a gateway apart!
(P.S. any one know where i can get a service manual for this laptop?)

afaik the screens are pretty good and i have never seen someone complaining about it
but make sure to get one from a powerseller or someone with a lot of positive feedback so they can give you a better support

I got mine today. Cosmetically flawless. Everything seems to be working well. I just can't seem to get over the 900x1400 screen. All my last lappies have been uxga. If anyone wants this send me an offer, otherwise I'm gonna RMA it...

    Not so fast, grasshopper -

It says "WXGA 1440 x 900" on the box, on the sales literature, on the specifications sheets, on Gateway's website, and probably many other places.

However, this does not change the fact that many of the P-7805u's have WUXGA 1920 x 1200 screens.

So, quite often, one does not know for sure what screen it has until they power it up.

We have another thread going that shows an apparent relationship between P-7805u Serial Number/Batch numbers and the WUXGA screens, but it isn't conclusive.

Just opened mine up (one of my 2)

    Just my luck.......

One broken key, and when the fan on the left powers up, it makes a "bring" sound (my guess is the fan is hitting something)

I fixed the key already, and i'm guessing something is just in the way of the fan...
I don't feel like RMAing it unless something really big is wrong (i gotta go to school but when i get home ill test it more).

I might open the other one, idk yet (it's actually my friends, but he still diddn't pay me, so i might ebay it if he doesn't pay me, hence why i dont want to open it)

:(... sorry about the condition of the laptop, hopefully there's nothing a little elbow grease can't fix. Any idea what cause the broken key (Poor packaging)?

Did you pay an extra $120 or so to get them shipped in two days? That's alot of money. Well once I'm out of school, I'll be back on the forums waiting for more first hand accounts of their Gateways.

edit: May I ask, what does the laptop come with? ie. Power Adapter, Disks, Paperwork, etc.

The laptop comes in a brown box and a battery and a power adaptor, that's it...

The key was most likley just poor quality control... because all i had to do was steal a mount from another keyboard (thank god it fit) and pop the key on... i suppose it wasn't a broken key, broken mount.

And no, i actualyl did the $2 shipping, they ship from about 200 miles from me :D (i'm, so ordering from Tigerdirect more often because of that)

When i get home and stress test it (to check for any BSODs and temps) i'll pop it open too and see what the heck is up with the fan (2nd laptop with a bad fan in a row btw)

    Hello,

I am new here and just registered to share my exprience with you guys. Hopefully this is the first of many posts.

I ordered from Tiger direct a refurb 7805u unit wich I received today. I just opened it and noticed that the cover for the hard drives was popped open (screwed in but not closed properly). Everything seems to be fine so i just unscrewed the door and put it back in properly then screwed it in again. No biggie but makes you wonder about QA.

The machine was pristine when i opened it not even a scratch or dent (other than the cover mentioned above). Unfortunately it does have the smaller resolution screen but its not a big deal for me.

I will let you know how it goes as I start using it.

PS. The machine came in on a brown box with the gateway logo, inside was the power adapter, the battery, the laptop and 2 pieces of paper describing the limited warranty . No cd's or manuals as expected. I am currently burning my recovery cd's before i start tinkering with it.

    One quick observation...

It seems like my power brick is quite noisy but more so when the laptop is not drawing a load (computer off or disconnected) the buzz is constant. When drawing a load (computer on) it just emits an intermittent buzz.

The buzz sound it emits is similar to the interference of a cellphone on a speaker (hopefully you know what i mean).

Has anyone else noticed it or is it just mine?

    Hopefully its normal.

So... my "brrring" problem is on the fan that is a PITA to get to (the one closest to the COA)
So, i'm just going to live with it...

My question though, that fan seems to speed up and down when it is just starting, then it runs fine... is this just how that fan is on everyones?
