Gateway P-7805u Geoforce 9800 GTS driver

I just bought a used P-7805u and get the black screen problem while doing casual web surfing & watching videos (No gaming) after 30 to 90 minutes of usage. I downloaded RivaTuner & it says that I have a generic monitor and wasn't able to change the settings to 2D to see if that would work.

I'd appreciate a link to the original Geoforce 9800 GTS driver for the P-7805u laptop or a file attachment on this forum. Thanks.

 

One more question to those who have experienced the same problem with the screen abruptly going black with a slight audio lag till everything but the lights and fan go off. Did the problem turn out to be the motherboard,video card, cmos battery, or overheating?

BTW, I found a video (1st link) to fix the overheating issue, but the 2nd video that shows how to dissemble the laptop seems like a chore for a novice like me.

zzvelik.. You didn't say what driver version you have but I have been using driver version 285.79 for the last 5 years without any issues. Maybe you can find that one somewhere? I read somewhere that some recent versions were not working as well for some people. Anyway, most newer versions were for newly released games which I don't do.

 

Thanks for the reply. The device manager says 21.21.13.4201 under Nvidia GeForce9800M GTS Properties. I still get the black screen after 30 minutes to 2 hours of usage and haven't figured out how to get rid of it.

 

I'm using driver version 8.17.12.8579 so you can see it is quite a bit older than yours. But your problem may be related to heat as you say you get black screen after using the computer for awhile. There has also been a issue with GPU capacitors. Maybe time to get a new computer?

 

Thanks again for the response. I have my old p-7805u which never had heat issues, but had some cosmetic and hinge issues, so I bought a 2nd laptop & had switched over the hard drives. I can take both laptops to a technician and transfer the motherboards, but not sure if it's something that a typical tech can do or not.

 

I had a computer technician swap the motherboards and he also cleaned out all the dust and both laptops seem to be working ok now. I listed the old one with on Ebay for parts in case anyone is interested.
