Its been some times since i got this laptop but lately its been horrible. The graphics card just get way to hot over little things. I cant even watch a video on youtube without it jumping up to 90c and its only going to get worse because summer is coming.
The graphics card is stock untouched since day i bought this laptop so im 100% positive sure the vents are blocked off with dust, i've tried many times to disassemble this but problem with this laptop is in order to get to GPU i have to take this dam thing completely apart and that scares me plus some of the screws are worn in and cannot be taken out.
Also havent updates bio's in a whole or anything because last time i tired it gave me some crazy error that i could fix and was forced to reformat my computer, but im pretty sure its up to date.
What are my options right now? would i have to take this to a shop? I literally cant play any games because after about 10 minutes its either in the high 90 or over 110c

Live in or near San Antonio Texas? Id fix it for cost (thermal material)...
Id also offer to fix it if you sent it to me, but since I am new HERE on these forums, I have zero credibility to work with... then again, I only need one
Also, if you DO plan on redoing it, if you have the spare cash, get the Revision2 GPU Heatsink/fan... its just better (I made a post the other day about why... dont feel like retyping...)...
That being said, my family is rather large (aunts/uncles/distant and what-not), and over half of them have purchased HP's (the others mostly sony/dell/toshiba), as the appointed "family tech", I have a dv67xx I need to go put back together... gorilla glue for the case and screw housings where it was needed, cleaning OFC, and re-thermal material... bleh... I hate HP's... -
If you dilligently from day one blow out the air vents you may never have to pull it appart. Once you alow the build up though it may be too late for just an air blow out. It is however worth a try............. -
Since the last time I keep a can of compressed air nearby and blow it out once every week or so, very briefly but effectively. It's been over 6 months now and I have not seen a minimal increase in idle temperatures, still Idling around 44 degrees while browsing and reaching a max of 70-75 while gaming. -
Guess ill give the compressed air a try, but this is very frustrating. the CPU is so easy to get to but the for the GPU the monitor and every needs to come off...blows my mind
-
TANWare is right about probably needing to take the comp apart if you haven't been regularly blowing out the vents.
In my case (and my laptop wasn't running nearly as hot as yours), it was far, far too late for compressed air to be of any use, though I tried it several times. When I finally broke down and took it apart, I found a clot of dirt and hair that was so thick that I at first thought it was some sort of pad that belonged there! Now, both the CPU and GPU run about twenty degrees cooler than they did before.
If you're really, really reluctant to take your computer apart yourself, then you might want to consider taking it to a shop and having them clean it out. It might run you a hundred bucks or so, but it beats having to buy a new MB or laptop.
I was nervous about taking mine apart, as well, but in the end, I really had no choice. I just took it apart in order, as per the Gateway P-Series Disassembly Guide, taped screws that belonged together on their own sticky note, and numbered each note as I took the computer apart (eg. 1-22) Then I cleaned and thermal pasted everything that needed it and put everything back together, going from the screws on the last sticky note (number 22) to the first ones. Took me about four hours, but it was definitely worth the risk. -
but yeah, it might be too little too late for canned air... -

It shouldn't cost more than a hundred dollars or so. The local guy I originally talked to about my laptop here in the SF Bay Area in California figured it would cost me between $75-$115 for him to dismantle and clean, then suggested I seriously consider taking the laptop apart myself, and directed me to the local Radio Shack to pick up a tube of Arctic Silver.
On the other hand, I priced the P-7805 FX on EBay a couple of days ago (just out of curiosity), and the cheapest one I found was $550. I didn't look any farther to check its condition, as I was actually doing a search on something else, but that's definitely more than what you'll pay if you need to get someone to dismantle yours.

Hey guys quick question on thermal paste required for the video card of my p7808u. When i took my heat sink off to upgrade my processor (T9900) there was a square thermal pad (consistency of gum) for the video card, nothing like the thermal paste used on the processor (before or after). I never used the arctic silver paste that i used on the new cpu because i was confused so i just kept in place what was there, bad idea i know. Anway, what was this and does it need to be replaced with something similar? Suggestions would be great.
-
That is the NB on the CPU heat sink, not the GPU. You can either keep the pad or replace it with ICD butg preferably AS5 and a copper shim. Do not just use AS5 on the NB as there is no preassure and AS5 will just flow out and there will be no thermal transfer..................

Further, is it worth my time digging into the laptop and removing the GPU HS and replacing the TIM there? I seem to recall somewhere somebody saying that something on the stock GPU is lacking TIM. Any guidance here?
Do you know of any good programs that give me GPU temps?
Do you know of any diagnostics software that test the condition of hardware such as the MotherBoard, Ram, GPU etc.... -
If you are going to dig into the system for the GPU I would suggest getting the P79 single GPU HS/Fan as it will run the system cooler. Yes that tim will dry out so at some point you will have to replace it.
So long as you take your time and do it correctly a good cleaning and reapplication of an old system is definitely worth it.
GPU temps HWMonitor works great.
Diagnostics software really does not exist for hardware condition other than ones designed to test components and see if they either pass or fail. There are various individual tests for specific components.............. -
Thanks again. Would you be able to tell me where to get the P79 cooling fan u speak of?
There are two cooling fans, why not replace both? -
There are two versions of the CPU heatsink as well. If you have the short leg one then you already have the one rated for the higher TDP. The GPU fan and hs are available through ebay or adeal's web site. Get the one that is a single unit................

just wanted to let everyone know that if you have 2009 model p-78 fx series laptops with 9c.21.00 bios and above that run hot at idle because the fan only kicks on at 80c. all you have to do is check your bios version and if you dont have the 9c.17.00 bios ur gonna want that one cuz it runs the fan constantly at a low speed and also runs max at 70c you can get the 9c.17.00 bios from the gateway website. my laptop used to idle in the upper 70s before this fix now it runs between 48 and 55c at idle. just thought id like to share this , it took me 4 months to find a fix for this issue, hope this helps someone. says for vista but im running it on win 7 just fine with zero issues.
for x86
Gateway P78 BIOS Update v9C.17.00
for x64
Gateway P78 BIOS Update v9C.17.00
Gateway P-7805u video card idling at 80c
