So while I was transferring files from my old desktop to my new PC I discovered something. Some Photos that I have which contained a fair amount of red looked bright and vibrant on my old desktops screen, but on the gateways screen its dull and sort of "Muddy" looking.
After setting things up I decided to dual screen with this computer and created a pure red background in paint and splited it between the two screens. My older Samsung showed a prefect bright red, while the gateways screen showed dark and dull red. I tired other colors to. Purple looked liked a light blue, Lime green was dark green, Orange a dull muddy color, etc.
The Samsungs screen was made in May 2006, I was hoping by 2008 LCDs would have improved rather than devolve. The purple color really frighted me, it really looked like shade of blue rather than violet. Is there any way of fixing this?
PS: I had screen brightness up all the way during my comparisons.

Replacing the Gateway would fix it.

Go into nVidia control panel and try Digital Vibrance. This make a night and day difference in color quality and robustness.
-
Hehe it seems that people got used to say "replace it" for all the problems.
-
not to go totally off topic, actually i am but, what do BB do with all the returns. sell as refurbs, or, pack'em up again nice and good and sell as new. Nvidia might be picking up the tab for the card overheating issues, but what about the screen or other nit-picks that people are experiencing. i can just imagine some neurotic guy out there buying-exchanging just to get the perfect one.

the units get sent back to gateway for fixing issues... if there are none, i believe unit just gets repacked.

Heres an update on what I've done.
I have gone through and messed around with the settings on the Nvidia control pannel, while I did mange to repair some of the color issues for one thing (The red colors) it completely threw off the the other side of the color spectrum. I was viewing some sport photos and jerseys that should have been purple are now full blown blue. This is not acceptable since I plan to do digital artwork on this PC.
I read online on Bestbuys site, one of the reviewers said the color was a little off. I've played games like Battlefield 2142, Bioshock, and what not and the colors all look fine. But if I'm going to be edditing photos that where totally different colors on my older PC this is going to be a problem.
Some friends said I might have gotten a "bad apple" one. However I don't really feel this. My desktop monitor is a High quality Samsung and their hard to beat. Perhaps laptop screens just aren't that ready for perfect color editing, I don't know.
I'm heavily considering getting the Dell 630 at Bestbuy right now, any more suggestions I'm all ears. Till then I think I'll wait for the new OLED screens -
^ It doesn't hurt to replace it instead of believing that the 7811's screen just "sucks".
It says here that the screen is actually decent:

Quick add on:
According to the review that maskedformed posted the gateway did very well. However they did note that the screen wasn't that great plus the fact that all laptop screen fail compared to desktop LCDs, I wish I saw this article earlier lol
What I had forgotten to mention earlier in my last post was the fact the screen on my gateway bleeds a lot. The screen doesn't even have to be dark to notice the affect it does. Bad color, bleeding....this isn't looking good -
No idea what type of tests they do...but ive been extremely impressed with my p-7811 screen. Colors are just awesome...and its sharp enough to where you can still read most small text at native resolution with ease. And my eyes are not that great.
However the quality control on these screens suck, most of them are not as good as they "can be". My first laptop had a really nasty air bubble trapped under the polarized film that looked kinda like a glare at even the slightest angles...and both my first and my second had a really noticeable light halo lining the bottom of my screen.
The one I am on now seems flawless though...the light halo is barely noticeable, its like it isn't there. And none of that air bubble stuff. So I think the screens are pretty nice...when they do not have a ton of flaws. -

As I said before if accurate colors are a big issue try this: http://www.amazon.com/Pantone-MEU10...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1220290651&sr=8-1
External hardware based calibration is the only way to insure color space uniformity from machine to machine, screen to screen. If you can't fix it with the Huey you have a bad screen and should exchange your 7811 for a new one. -
Id say the screen is to cold looking, i will go check the setings on my acer it has a warmer look and i know its posible to do it moving the r b g bars -
Now that I notice it...Red does seem a lil off...like its too light. Gonna see if I can figure out a way to optimize it to look better.
-
compared to my ati and even the old voodoo cards the image quality on nvidia video cards looks a little washed out.
-
My main gripe is video...it looks very washed out to me unless its on a tiny window. It may be the massive resolution of the LCD but I duno. The colors in games and even desktop colors are superb otherwise.
Im coming over from an ATI card and the "color" was one of the first benefits I noticed of this card. Mainly after tinkering with digital vibrance. There just seems to be some flaws in video and the color red...which is likely related to the LCD. I think the resolution of the movies I try to play are just too low. -
remeber nvidia has diferent setings for video/desktp colors the video ones are 2 down form the desktop seleciton and you can tinker with them 2. I made my screen a little warmer im still not happy with the purple but i can live with it now.
-
I'd say screen resolution is very subjective matter. I dont get point here if you are going to use this thing for digital image editing why wont you calibrate it first using some hardware calibration device. Probably you should calibrate both your screen using some calibration tool and than compare both of them side by side to see how it looks. Also keep in mind that Samsung & Sony screens are at different level than what you will get with other manufacturers. Also you are comparing Desktop screen with laptop LCD. Best way to do this will be to do Apple to Apple comparison by calibrating your screen first. Also try and see if you connect your gateway to external screen what kind of color difference you see between that and LCD.

Anyone have any luck yet with perfecting the color of their 7811 screen? I do not get it...for the most part things are looking pretty good. Games have great picture...the desktop looks pretty good...pictures are alright for the most part.
Yet as soon as you open paint and start looking at the colors...you can tell something just is not right. I have tinkered around the Nvidia settings quite a bit and it does not seem to do the job.
Any other suggestions that do not require a new piece of hardware?
