Ok so this week I was updating my P78 windows update and if I let it idle for a bit the screen suddenly freezes no movement nothing. Anyone with ideas why it does this? I am going to later this week dissemble and redo the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU and see what is going on. The fans are working so that isn't the problem. I don't get sudden shutdown or alert of thermal overload. And the hard drive isn't the problem I changed to another and same freeze problem also changed RAM and same results....what else did I miss?

Might try to back off that last update.

Backoff any updates that you did just prior to your problem. And I wouldn't ever do a Nvidia update unless absolutely necessary. I did one Nvidia update when I upgraded my OS to Win7 64 several years ago on my P7805u and never did another. I don't game so I don't need the constant updates for new games.

You have to remember that with Windows 7 we have to use the legacy firewire drivers or it will hang the system on attempting sleep/hibernation.

I use Windows 7x64 Ult Sp1 but how come my P-6860FX with the same driver works fine no freeze??? Both have the same software setup as well.

the main board is different and probably the hardware versions for the firewire chipset as well. I am sure Gateway could modify the drivers as needed but I highly doubt we will ever see that.

I thought so...but I have to make time and dissemble my laptop and redo the thermal paste for the CPU and GPU and see the problem persists.

Well I finally redid the thermal paste and re-imaged a older image of the working copy of the system and this time I was able to update and let it run and no more freeze. So I can at time point in time assume something during my updates for either Windows update or separate file updates caused or created part of the problem with the system stability. At least I can rest safely right now that my GPU isn't dying or going out.

Now just to make sure I don't do something like that again.... whew.... I did the latest Windows update and it went ok and booted and worked and no freeze....big lesson make sure to do the re-imaging correctly to make sure it works and update correctly....
