Holy crap! This just came in at future shop in Canada. As far as I can tell, it's custom made because it is the only gateway fx with a quad core

    http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10126072&catid=

    it is basically a 7809u with a

Intel core 2 Quad Q9000 and
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M

    instead of

    Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor1 P8700 (2.53GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 3MB L2 Cache)2
    and NVIDIA® GeForce® 9800M GTS Graphics with 1GB of GDDR3

and costs $1600 instead of $1,250

    is it worth the buy?

Yeah, it the next gen of FX thats only available in Canada right now.

As to whither or not its worth 1600 to you, i'm not sure. I would Say definitely worth it at 1450-1500 but at 1600 is starting to get a bit costly. But its a very solid computer, so if you have the money then yeah its a good buy

okay, it's not pasted on, but it's still ugly. I would take me all of 2 minutes to make a similar logo in photoshop. all i'd have to do is download a random brush and click. I wonder why they changed the design? The old one looked fine. This just looks tacky.

I'm gonna return this and dish out $2500 for a sager. So if you have any questions before I return it, ask away. =)

also, is there any way for me to configure the touchpad somehow?

you mean between this and the sager i planto buy?

i think the sager. it has a gtx 280, and since 280 is bigger than 260, I 'm gonna guess that the gtx 280 is more powerful.

the main reason i want the sager is because i like the minimalist design. I might decide to keep this laptop anyway. I have two weeks to decide if i want to return this one.

i suspect it will be the same for me

I think I'm actually starting to like this notebook. But that's only because I haven't had to look at the ugly logo since I started using it. The keyboard is a bit weird though, especially with the shift key.

I think I'll keep this one but buy a suede casing skin

Can you post a pic of the logo? I'm curious as to if it's really that bad. I really like the back of my 7811, it looks sort of like a checkered flag or something. And is the sager you're talking about the np9280? I don't know if the leap from the 9 series to the 200 series is as big in laptops as it is in desktops (I think it's like the 8 vs 9 series in desktops), but I heard that the 9280 actually has an upgradable GPU. If that's true, then I would probably get it. Of course, I don't know what kind of limitations there are on the upgrade. And maybe the big thing will be external GPUs. This is a tough time to buy a high end laptop I guess, as there's a lot of new technology coming down the pipe.

But I agree, Sagers are sexy as hell. They're all business on the outside. And the 9280 actually looks like a pretty good deal. It's what I'd get if I had that much money to spend on a laptop.

close, i was actually talking about the 9850

here is the logo. it actually looks a lot worse irl because it is overly saturated and takes up ~70% of the lid

    [img=http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/9814/gtw3wide.th.png]

edit: after comparing the pic with the case again, i can tell that the colors are way off. the real thing looks cheap as hell. I'm sorry i don't have a camera but if you could see it irl, you would probably agree with me. the rest of the chasis is great, though.

i'm sure some pics will surface soon

i've decided to keep this laptop because it is the best price to performance i could find. But i will at some point buy a suede laptop skin

This is my first laptop, is there anything I should look out for before the 14 day return period is over? ie dead pixels, malfunctioning parts etc

What's the screen resolution? If you really want to return for dead pixels, you can. I have a stuck subpixel, but when your screen has over 2 million pixels, it really doesn't seem like it would matter. As for malfunctions, I don't really know. You can't really predict stuff like that, unless you have a part that is known to malfunction. I would just get HWMoniter or something and watch the temps closely for a while, and post anything you think is irregular. Of course, you're probably the only one with this laptop on these threads.

So you don't have a different letter for the noise you make when you say "about"?

But could you? What if you wanted to put in an azerty keyboard or something?

Im quite sure the keyboard can be swapped, but I assure you all, our keyboards are no different than the states.

I know you actually have to purchase a french model for it to come with the bilingual keyboard.

Your right, I have never seen a laptop like that in my Bestbuy. The bottom picture you posted is like every keyboard from every laptop I have ever owned, as well as friends.

It may be a bilingual model, or maybe because it is exclusively Canadian, it is a bilingual keyboard.

Weird though, it can be swapped though if needed to.

I wish gateway would get a clue and do 2 things:
    1 backlit keyboard (something cool...)
2 WUXGA 1920 by 1200 screens in all these new laptops.

Those 2 things would have me sold on upgrading to another FX model.

Does Oblivion run on 64 bit Vista? I thought that it was totally incompatible (which is weird, because Morrowind still runs fine).

Let me know okay? Morrowind is my favorite PC game. I didn't like Oblivion on the 360, but I could easily fix all my problems with it myself if I had access to the construction set.

Yay. I might play that after I'm done with my current Morrowind character. But that could be in a year, by which time another map section might be added, and I might have super hard classes, and the never ending game will continue. And I'll probably have Win7, so who knows how that will work out.

    FYI,

Well I picked up the laptop last week and I ended up returning it today. As most of you know the keyboard layout is brutal. I only gave it a week but I could not get used to it.

It ran Crysis on high settings fine. However after 10-15 min. of play. (From start of game to the point where they find buddy in the tree) Temp of the GPU hit 94C. CPU ~77C .

So I decided to run Furmark and after 10 min. @1440x900 the GPU reached
95C and dont quote me but I think I recall seeing the Max CPU at 84C

Temps were monitored using HWMonitor. Ambient temp was around 23C

Needless to say I didnt like these temps and the keyboard so I returned. Sorry I didnt take screen shots but I thought some of you would like to know.

Pentium Dual Core, AMD Athlon 64 X2; 2 GB RAM; GeForce 7600, Radeon HD 2600; Hard Drive 15GB; DirectX 9.0c(2008,6)

now, when i run this game on my old desktop system (pentium D 2.80ghz, 4gb ram, 32 bit os (vista HP) it runs fine.....

here is the link to the system i bought, which is the one that cant seem to run this game: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10133772&catid=

here is the link to the game i am having trouble with: http://na.aiononline.com/

I have the P7912 Model Its the same as the p7901 but it has 8GB and 1TB (Which I already Had) I've had this laptop which is exactly the same keyboard and design since September and Ive gotten use to it very easily.

I play COD MW2 with 100FPS easily on Max Settings, I can play Crysis on MAX settings no problem. This laptop is a beast the only thing I want to change is perhaps the Hard Mod so I can overclock my Q9000 or in the future buy a QX9650 or something so I can overclock that.

The FN key I hit sometimes when trying to hit CTRL for ventrilo but only once in a blue moon. I think the P78/9xxx is the best you can get for under 2000$

Also my CPU runs at 60C MAX when gaming for hours on end, my HD might hit 50 again once in a blue moon. Also my GPU only reaches 66, and with an under-volt I'm sure I might be able to bring it down to 63 or so.
