That was a great sale! I just check some local Best Buy stores because I have to exchange my P6831 I have due to some dead pixels. The price is now listed at $1699. Those who got on board at $1239 with a free game got a tremendous deal! I like the P6831, I just don't like the dead pixels. Best Buy should be getting more in, but even at $1699, it's still a good deal.

I'll bet it's still the same price in the store today. The online price usually mirrors the store price unless there is a promotion.

At $1699 they will have plenty in stock! I only show two stores out of 10, in my area, that show stock. I'll phone when stores open..

I was going to buy this computer, but now it looks like Alienware or Sager will be getting my business instead of Gateway/Best Buy.

At $1700 I'd rather just pay the extra $300 and get a notebook with the 8800m GTX.

BB is gonna lose a lot of sales becuase Gateway will give a deal of $1499 on the p-171s fx with the better processor. You may be able to get them down more to.

Same here dude, I thought the price would go up to 1350 like it was originally, but Sager is giving me a better deal (including resolution) now.

I was getting ready to go buy one this morning and seen the price jumped. For the record, anyone who is doubting Best Buys dishonesty, they're going 350.00 over suggest retail and 450.00 over yesterdays price.

I wrote a letter to best buy calling them out on it letting them know they've lost my business. If gateway follows their lead, and changes that "suggested price" I won't be buying gateways again either.

I know "supply and demand" change prices, but this is insane. I wonder how the gaming console community would have reacted if walmart raised the price of the wii/360 because it was selling out all the time.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a similar non-hp laptop for around the same price? The video card is what sold me on this laptop. any suggestions would be appriciated.

Groan I wish I would have gotten around to deciding sooner because now I got screwed out of one of the best deals I had seen, unless it is still possible to get gateway reps to drop the price down to 1300 or so.

I wrote and email to BB as well asking them if the price change was a mistake or an increase. I said that gateway has a better model at a lower price, I also told them that I would not shop at BB agian if the price was an increase. Its a bit insane to increase the price that much over suggested price.

Hey, just an FYI to everyone if you are still considering this laptop. Get it from gateway directly, call the sales rep or click on the talk to gateway sales rep through their website. They can usually drop the price listed 15-20% Most I heard though was 15%. So if BB wants to do this take your money else where and get a discount from Gateway. I'm not sponsering/supporting anybody sales practice but just want to get the info out. Hopefully this can help some people out, I was lucky enough to get at the 1249 price at BB. I would never have gotten this laptop if it was priced any higher. The Gateway direct laptop has a better proc, slot loaded dvd drive, and finger print reader. The higher end model has the same with a higher res screen. One last thing make sure you realize they say they won't ship until March 7 at this point that may change to be sooner/later. Hope this helps.

It isn't that surprising since all of BB Dells are priced higher than on Dell's website. Why wouldn't it be the same for Gateway? Buying direct is always and will always be cheaper save for the occasional sale (like the last two weeks).

I had to find out about the price and its true, they will play with price with you. Two questions got answered here .

    1. changing the processor will void warranty. yes, thats obvious but I've seen many ocnflicting opinions about this.

    2. Buying direct is cheaper by far than best buy. taking off taxes, shipping and warranty, the 171sfx is only about 1349.00 for a better res, better processor and not having to give best buy a penny.

    3. it doesn't ship until march 7 putting it here on arch 13th, over a month and a half away.

    Kacee joined the incident.

    Kacee says:
Welcome to Gateway Sales Chat! My name is Kacee, and I will be helping you from North Sioux City, South Dakota. You can reach me by email at [deleted]. May I please get your phone number for future reference?

    sure, its *deleted*
    Kacee says:
What brings you to Gateway today? You can reach me directly by phone at 800.846.2042 ext 25383
    John says:
    ok
    John says:
I'm looking at the P-171S FX and have a few questions
    Kacee says:
Sure, I can assist you with this.
    John says:
How much is the extended waranty and how long is it?
    Kacee says:
It is 149.99 plus tax for three years.
    John says:
I was planning on buying the 6831 from best buy but they raised the price on me. So, I'm wanting something similar.
    John says:
Whats the best price you can do on the 171x fx?
    John says:
    with warranty of 3 years
    Kacee says:
Are you wanting the X or the S?
    John says:
    P-171SFX
    Kacee says:
Do you have a budget you are wanting to stay within?
    John says:
    yes
    John says:
I'd like to keep it around 1600 or so
    John says:
I'm thinking the 6831 will go on sale again, so if I can't get a good price here, I'll just wait it out
    John says:
I had another question as well
    John says:
The processor can be upgraded really easy in this model, will this void the warranty?
    Kacee says:
Before any discount your final price with shipping handling and tax is 1897.92, what were they selling this system for at Best Buy?
    John says:
    1249 yesterday
    John says:
    your site reccomends 1349
    Kacee says:
Upgrading the processor is not something I would recommend, it will void your service plan
    John says:
    ok
    Kacee says:
I can get your final price for the system and the three year limited warranty with shipping, handling and tax for 1686.95, would you lke to get that on order today?
    John says:
this is as low as you can get it?
    John says:
    http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529667881.php
    Kacee says:
I can see what my manager would approve, what price would make you buy right now?
    John says:
I'm not one to make impulse buys. I would need to think it out for a day or two to be honest with you
    Kacee says:
Well I can only promise discounts on the day that you purchase.
    John says:
ok. Providing I buy today, what is the cheapest you can get me down to?
    Kacee says:
The more I discount, the more it goes against me, so I am asking you what you think a fair price is and I will have to ask my sales manager for approval. I have already taken $200 off the system to try to get around your $1600 budget.
    John says:
can you get me down to around 1499?
    John says:
thats still 150 higher than best buy, but with the warranty, I'd say its a fair deal
    Kacee says:
The system we are offering is better than the best buy system though so essentially we are giving you the same price as best buy, with a better service plan than best buy is offering you at the same price. I can ask if I can take $50 more off the price but again that discount would only be good for today.
    John says:
    hmm
    John says:
ALright, well, thanks for your time today

final price with shipping/3 year warranty/taxes and a better system is 1649.00 TOTAL.

this is 50.00 cheaper than best buy for a better system and a three year warranty after shipping & tax

Before everyone goes crazy here, there are a few things you need to consider:

    1. BB is NOT an online retailer. They have a website, but they also sell at brick and mortar stores where there is an overhead. Their prices will be higher than online stores like Newegg!

    2. The P6831 FX is a Best Buy exclusive machine. If the machine came out at $1699 and was never priced at $1249, a lot of people would still have bought it! You can change out the CPU for a Penryn, and you'll have a system that compares favorably to laptops from boutique sellers like Alienware that sell for $3000 and up.

    3. If you buy from Gateway or Dell, you have to ship the computer back to them if something is wrong. I had some dead pixels on my P6831 and was able to exchange it for another one at BB no problem.

I was at a BB today exchanging my laptop. I got the last one in stock. Just after the exchange, I saw a man trying to buy one for $1249. The salesman told him the new price, and he was still interested if he could get it for $1249. Unfortunately, the sale is over. He was not happy. This happens in retail.

BB is still a great store. They have nice sales from time to time. Most of the people on this forum would definitely agree that this laptop was a steal at $1249 with a free PC game (I took World in Conflict). You probably thought that there was a misprint or something! Stop crying about the price change and wait for the next sale - it may be even better.

Also, Dell does the same thing. I bought an XPS 420 for a little over $1100 including tax. Now the same machine is priced at $1522 on their website, without tax! Retailers do these kinds of things. You just have to be there to take advantage of the sales.

Its nice after you've bought one at 100 under the suggest retail price you can belittle us for being unhappy about them going to 350 over suggested retail.

Anyhow, as my above post says, you can get it much cheaper at gateway and not have to deal with bestbuy and their 450.00 increase over night. Good luck fellas.

Also, I was thinking of a great idea. i'm buying mine March first and I was thinking if we had a few people buying at once (with their own information/payment/details) but with the same rep and a comitment to do so, we may be able to get the price even lower. anyone interested?

here is the 1349.00 suggest retail price they were honoring until this morning...

I would be interested. I actually had a sales rep email me on 01/31/08 in regards to a price quote and a 5% discount for the Gateway P-171XL FX model, but i might step down to the P-171X FX model that has a slot loading DVD/CD player (i don't want the HD-DVD player, i already have one and the XL is not slot loading) and TL-8300 Penryn chip (the XL model does not have it). It is a bit strange that the higher end model lacks some of the better features that the P-171X FX model posses. It is also $1k cheaper.

Thank you for the great information Army. I left a few voicemails for him to call me back tomorrow. When he calls back tomorrow and if i buy, i will post the information for you.

Well, things are looking up. I went to BB today to check out the 6831. The sales guy was mystified when I showed him the sales price printed out from yesterday.

He goes and looks up on BB computer for next shipment, then calls me over. Price to date, $1699. Price of shipping units for this and other surrounding stores; $1399!!

So, someone please go to their local store and check for Wednesday's shipment. I got a name and number of the sales guy so will check back Wednesday.

awesome. I think if we have 5-10 people ready to buy and a rep wantig to make a ton of comission at once will gladly take our business at a low rate. I think we could play the game a bit and even tell the rep we're going to keep pestering them until we find a rep with the lowest price. All their prices are different so, I thin kthat'll get the first rep to the lowest price really fast.

The rep I chatted with gave me a 22% discount without the 5-10 other potential sales pitch.

This is no excuse at all! For weeks it was selling at $1350, then this last for 1250; there is no reason that the price would inflate 350(450) overnight. If they needed that kind of overhead from the get-go, it would have been priced as such.

I disagree here. There are alot of other gaming laptops in this price range; many from Toshiba and Dell. The only thing that made the gateway really special (sure, its a nice laptop, but no stand-out) was the price. Just because Alienware overprices their crap, does not mean other makers do.

That is fine. What people are complaining about, is that the laptop jummped in price for NO REASON. There is no reason whatsoever that this 350(450) dollar jump is excusable.

Well yeah - I don't blame the guy. If some company tried selling me something for $450 more than it was yesterday, despite no hardware or software changes, i would be fuming. Its called price gouging...

Best buy a great store? I think i will drop it right there...

SO, I wrote bestbuy yesterday morning with some evil hate speech. anyhow, the first is my message to them, and their reply.

This inquiry is related to: Web My inquiry is specifically related to: Orders Primary Phone: deleted First Name: John Last Name: deleted E-mail: deleted Order Number: Questions or Comments: What the hell? You guys raised the price 450.00 over night on the p-6831gx? 300.00 above the suggested retail price? Keep it. I won't buy anything from you guys now. I was planning on buying 2 of them march 1 and now i'm not going to spend one penny with you guys. this is disgusting.

Pardon my low eyebrow angry language, but horseshit. They send me this letter expecting me to believe they raised the price to stay competitive and nothing to do with increasing the profit for bestbuy. Nonsense. This settles it I'll wait until march 8th or so once the first shipments hit of the 171s fx hits. Once I see they're going fine, I'm just going to order from Gateway direct and skip buying from bestbuy ever again. My 10,000 dollars in purchases from bestbuy don't matter, I'm sure my future purchases won't matter either. I'll feel better though.

I was looking at one a couple days ago and found the screen to be aweful, it looked completely washed out. I don't know if that was because they had it connected to an external monitor or not though.

Yes screen sucks. If you have someone else watching FX beside, behind, front, backwards, or whatnot, they won't be able to fully enjoy the viewing.

However, after doing abit of research, I realize the screen is one of those anti-privacy screen. I didn't like it at first, but I have gotten used to it now. It has zero dead pixel and I like gaming, interneting and watching movies on it. Serves its purpose. Atleast bystanders can't really see what I am doing with my headset on.

BestBuy makes every attempt to ensure the prices we offer to our customers are consistently the lowest available. This commitment is reflected in our everyday low prices and our sale prices. LOL thats exactly what they wrote to me, its all scripted. They could care less what we think. I wrote back to them explaining that gateway suggests it at $1349 and raisedit $350, not trying to make a profit eh?

lol, you'll get a few more from them then. I wrote back a few times and told them I was pissed that I kept getting a canned message. They responded with another canned message...

This is the complete rundown of my run in with them. the bottom one is where the last one left off, then goes up from there.

I will not check back with the website, I will just skip purchasing anything from you guys again. I hope this works out for you guys, I'm not near the only person who feels this way. You didn't raise the price 350.00 above the suggested retail price to increase profit? This was because you wanted to stay competitive? I'm not a genius by any means, but you want me to believe ...raising the price keeps you competitive? At first, I thought you guys needed an ass chewing, but I'm fast learning you need a new business strategy. I've bought countless items from best buy including my last 5 laptops for my wife and I, my 50" plasma, my old 46" tv, my wii, my surround and a ton of media for my 360 and wii. I realize losing my 10,000 in business over the course of the next 5 years means nothing to you guys, I do realize that. But, I'll at least retain a bit of principles that your company obviously lacks. For the record, I can buy a better version of this laptop at a cheaper price through gateway. I was being "brand loyal" to your store as always. After 4 years of buying all of my electronics at bestbuy, I will never buy so much as a piece of gum from you guys again. I am so disappointed that what I considered a fair store with great prices has turned in to a money grubbing machine. I don't care for circuit city, but at least they don't do these underhanded tactics.

    ----------------------------------------------------

I don't really care, the more I think about it. The 171sfx has a finger print reader, a better processor and overall, a better price. Besides, bestbuy did some stupid ****, and then lied to try and cover it up.

I hear ya i spoke with gateway yesterday and they are willing to lower the price of the 171sfx to at least $1499, but im sure you can get em down a few more dollars. Thats most likely what I will do, since I am thru with BB.

Definitely order the P-171S or P-171X direct through a Gateway rep. Both of these models are better than the BB P6831FX and Gateway WILL DICKER. I got the P-171X which has higher resolution, fingerprint reader, faster CPU etc. for $1,699.99....dickered down from $1,999.99. Even if you wanted the 171S, which is still better than the P6831, I bet you could dicker it down a couple hundred dollars. PM me if you want my reps information, he said he would hook others up too. Good luck!

Thats a good deal. I got the rep yesterday down to 1624 of on the 171s fx with a 3 year warranty, tax, and shipping. I never knew until yesterday they'd barter with you. Its a pretty sweet deal. I think, on the first of march (taxes) i'm going to buy two of them, one ofr me and one for the wife and see if I can get even lower. even if not, 22% off just for asking, thats not bad.

if enough of you guys e-mail best buy, they will eventually change the price. Right now they will see a big down fall on sales of the laptop, so it would be ecnomically smart for them to lower the price, and see sales go up.

You guys/girls lucked out better then i did. I can't catch a break when it comes to purchasing computers. I had my Alienware Aurora m9700 for about a year and a half and i have had nothing but problems and aggravation from day one. Plus the unit just crapped out on me conveniently after my warranty expired (the video card, battery, lcd screen, etc). Also, i do not like being treated poorly by their condescendingly inept customer service. This was my first pc (and maybe my last), so hopefully you all can understand my frustration and overwhelmed state of mind.

I wanted to make a fresh start and get a decent pc that would last me for quite a while. Yesterday i did not get off to a good start. I received back several emails from my assigned quote rep Nelson and he was very abrupt and did not answer any of my questions. Plus, he did not even return any of my calls after i requested him to, because i work odd hours.

Hey, if Gateway does not want my business, that is fine with me. This just leaves a bad taste in my mouth about Gateway and i did not even buy the thing yet (lol). Btw, here is their ratings from Resellerratings.com. This worries me.

    http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Gateway

If anyone could help me and possibly please supply me with the rep that you spoke to and ext, maybe i could fend off any imminent aggravation if i speak to someone and get what i wanted right from the start. I am interested in either the 171-X or 171-XL models.

On a separate note, i contacted Xotic.com, Sager.com, and Powernotebooks.com about the Sager 5792/5793 laptop, which is identical to the Gateway P-171X (at least i think so). The only one i spoke with so far was Powernotebooks and the guy there Tim, was not really helpful and only gave me one word answers (maybe it's me, lol). The problem with these companies (which were all higher rated on resellerratings.com), is that they do not have financing and Gateway does. Which brings me back to the fact that maybe i should of bought the Gateway P-6831 @Bestbuy with their 3 year warranty + 6mo financing, which at first, i thought was an impulse buy, but is looking pretty good now (There is no phone-based support though).

Sorry for the long-winded post, but i want to make the right choice. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

    1. I talked to Kacee yesterday via chat and she got me down to 1624 with 3 year warranty, taxes, shipping all included for the 171sfx. sh can be reached at 800.846.2042 ext 25383. I wouldn't think twice about pointing to this thread, she seemed reasonable, best i could tell from chat anyhow.

    2. Gateway has a bad rap for being broke all the time. thats one thing that worries me. I've had so far... an comaq desktop, an hp desktop, a nec laptop, a dell laptop, an hp laptop, a sony laptop, a toshiba laptop and a long time ago (1996 or so) I owned a pionex.

I'm hard on computers, especially laptops. I buy a new laptop every year and have for a few years. The only real difference is warranty.

my nec died and they didn't honor their warranty

my hp had many problems. the power supply broke 3 times, the battery died after 3 months, the hinges went out 3 times in one year, the keypad fell apart 2 times and the screen had dead pixel problem. Their warranty was **** too. Every time I sent it in, I would be without laptop for 2 weeks. in the course of a year, I had it less than they did. When the warranty started to run out, I sent it back to get a complete work over and then stashed it in my closet in the box so I'd have a backup.

my dell lasted 2 long years and I never had one problem with it, not one. It was very durable.

the sony I'm currently typing on has been a nightmare too. The hinges went out, the pwoer brick has went out 3 times and the right click stopped working, all of which sony refuses to fix. My wife has the same sony and it took her three weeks to get the hard drive replaced when it went out.

portable=short life span. If you're wanting something to last a long time, you'd be better off getting a desktop. they'll last longer than you'll want them. My old emachine desktop is 4 or 5 years old and still runs like new. my son uses it to play games on and he's not broke it yet after 2 years of exclusive use (he's only 7 too)

Warranty is the big issue. If your laptop breaks, are they going to fix it in a timely mannor? for me, I only expect to get a year out of a laptop, so the duration isn't a big deal to me. this one, I'm going to pack on the three year warranty for parts, labor, and acciental damage. it'll pay off in the long run for me.

My wifes dell lasted a long time too. she had her first dell for at least 2 years and the second for 3. I like dell, but the price is too high for the little you get.

    3. don't worry about long winded psots. I personally would rather a complete post instead of a one liner that doesn't makes sense.

something else too, I should have mention is people only post to sites like that when soemthing goes wrong. It would be different if if some sellers had a good rep, but its the same with all of them.

    http://www.resellerratings.com/store/dell

    http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Hewlett_Packard

    http://www.resellerratings.com/store/compaq

    http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Sony_Style

and the list goes on. Alienware got a pretty good rating, but I could by 4 of any of the above for the price of one alienware.

Also, you have to keep in mind that some people are stupid. If you dig around on here and many other forums, you get a good idea of how stupid some people are. yes, there are some reasonable complaints, but a lot of them are ignorant. I was reading one the other day where the woman was upset that HP wouldn't replace her laptop after she "spilled" an ashtray in her laptop a month after warranty expired.

a lot of it is plain common sense. If you leave your laptop out of it case and sitting open on a table with small children running around, its going to get broke. if you leave yourlaptop in -20 degree car over night and start it up in the heat, the lcd is going to break. If you sit it on the power board, its going to break.

I think the difference is, people who buy alienware realize their investment and spend a little more time keeping it from getting broke. Its just my guess, but it seems logical.

has anyone gone to best buy and tried to negotiate the price down? maybe if someone printed off the S-FX from gateways website they could be persuaded to drop the price?

I would bet thats why there are some differences. That way they can say "its not the same thig" regardless if the direct version is better or not.

well I wonder if you could give them some excuses such as "well the gateway one has A slot loading DVD player, A Fingerprint reader, AND A Better processor. why would I choose yours over that? especially when the manufacturers retail is only 1350 and you have it at 1700"

I might try that tonight just to see.

Best buy knows some uneducated people will pay $1699. They're just trying to make a hefty profit for a week or two before they bring the price back down after the unit stops selling.

On a side note i was orig. going to pick up an Asus G series laptop, but, after seeing the gateway next to the G1 I was completely swayed by looks alone. Sure the cpu is a little slow, but, i've yet to notice any serious issues. GPU is amazing!

I won't be supprised if they dump the price again on march 6th when shipping starts on the FX. This could be a way for them to create a buzz too. I don't think it'll matter for me. If the price lowers, theres a few things to consider. 1, if I buy it from bestbuy, I can have it fixed in store if it breaks. plus, I can get it right then and not have to wait on 2-4 weeks of gateway shipping.

If I buy from gateway, I can get it cheaper, thats for sure. The slot load, the fingerprint reader and the better processor is a plus too. I'm still undecided, even if the price goes down. I'm kinda glad I got a month to think it out. I'm still pissed at best buy too for being douchebags about it.

yes u can get it right about lower than that i heard.Em all if the gateway rep refuse about the discount, all u hav to do is go ask another. And just dont go straight up and say, I want this and i need a discount pls. Make them talk to u, give good manners, talk and talk, like making friends with them and say u want that laptop but its over ur budget. And when they ask about ur budget, Its kinda like they'll offer u a discount.

Ive heard that people got the x edition ($1999) down to 1599 or something like 20% off I believe it was... and they were thinking about seeing if they could get gateway to do lower if they guaranteed 10-20 purchases at the price

So potentially if you could get 20% off that is down to 1279 IIRC otherwise like 10% off is about 1450 and 15% off is 1360

Potentially a group buy/discount could be attempted to maybe get a rep to go 20-25% off if they knew they were gonna sell 10-20 of the S and X notebooks

OK people, here's my Best Buy story. Last night I went to the local BB and asked about the P6831fx. They had 1 in stock, locating it in the cage area. I asked the person I was talking to about price matching (who happened to be the manager of the computer section) and stated gateway.com has the 1349 m.s.r.p. advertised. He said oh sure, no problem, we can do that.

OK, that's cool. Well today when we actually had the cash available, I checked gateway.com again before leaving, still msrp'ed at 1349 so I went to BB. They had me fill out some paperwork to buy it and we then went back to also get a washer\dryer set.

The BB guy came back and said 'we ran into a little problem with the price' and my heart sank. He went to talk to his boss and came back and said sorry, we can take a 100.00 off the price but that's it. They said that it is LISTED as 1349 but the link to BB still shows 1699. OK, well I said that's to much for me, apologized for having them going through all the trouble to hold it, etc.

...AND THEN the guy was like OK, well, let me see what I can do, going on to say it'd be really to bad if you (me) don't get to walk out of here with it. He dropped it by 300 to 1399.

Well I now have one. Haven't hooked it up yet, still in shock that after years and years of waiting to get something better than my AthlonXP2500, 1.5GB, and GeForce 5100FX system to play games is now at an end. I have been purchasing games for several years with EVERY intention of playing them 'just as soon as I get a computer worthy'.

    Well now I have one.

So it does work, BB will work with you you just have to get the right person and work on them.

Just had a nice conversation with six different best buys in my locality. The first five who showed in stock online told me 1699 sorry for my luck that it was on sale till Saturday for 1249. So I called one that showed it not being stock and got the manager of the computer department. I did this cause I wondered if the 1399 to transfer to a store was true. He pulls it up and says yeah i have one in stock actually and I about the price and he says 1699. I said wow thats a big diff and gateways website shows the 1349 msrp. I sat on hold a bit while he double checked it being in stock come back says not only do i have one in stock but I can sell it to you for the 1249 since that was the cheapest price within the last week. So I am picking it up when I get off work. Just takes talking to em the right way and getting lucky on who you talk to.
