I have a Gateway P7805u and I was multitasking when it crashed and shutdown. To my horror it now is completely dead, no lights. It just does nothing, I have unplugged battery etc. I have 3 power adapters and none of them do anything or provide any lights.

Did my P7805u get a short? Should I get it repaired? Where should I get it repaired?

    It is completely dead.

try resetting the cmos, the battery is under the wireless card. remove all batteries and AC then hold the power button for 30 seconds.

When you say crashed and shutdown did it bsod and then shutdown or just all of a sudden off?

I unplugged CMOS Battery lead, held down power button for 30+ secs, removed battery, no power plugged in but this did not work.

I plugged laptop back to power but nothing. No lights or anything on laptop.

Can anyone suggest a good place to send the P7805u in for repair?

Ok so I guess even the front light does not come on. Then without the AC addapter plugged into the laptop does the led on the power brick come on? If so once the power is plugged into the laptop does the led on the power brick stay on?

Also when you say shut down did it power down like someone hit shut down or did it just all of a sudden die?

Unfortunately it just suddenly died. Even with AC Adapters plugged in no lights or will not power up. It is completely dead.

I have tired the CMOS trick, no luck. I really believe motherboard is dead or at very least power switch. The way it sut down it is like it shorted out.

I am hoping to find good laptop repair place to ship laptop to and get it fixed. Any recommendations?

Please can someone suggest a laptop repair place.

Shut down like that is usually overheat protection of the CPU. It may have fried, it could also have been overheat of a component of the board too.........

I guess it overheated then. I will send it in for repair somewhere.

    Any good recommendations?

there is a shop that repair main boards, but I am not convinced this is your issue. With the limited diagnosis sending this in for a MB repait might end up costing quite a bit more.

It could be the CPU, power board or a host of other issues including multiple issues that is causing the problem. I think Gateway offers a flat fee repair also but it is more expensive but I think that is an all inclusive repair.

Have you taken it apart and cleaned and inspected it?

No I have not cleaned it.

I had my laptop on a good notebook NXT cooler, using Targus 180 AC Adapter, a USB Hub was plugged in, watching a movie on laptop, external monitor hooked up via HDMI, IPAD was loading photos and surfing web.

The Laptop just shut off. Tried to restart with power button, dead. Tried different AC adapter no lights, unplugged battery, held power button for 30 secs to clear any residual power, unplugged CMOS battery cord to reset (I think that resets it) no luck.

I think it shorted out but how to determine what is wrong without dismantling laptop. If it overheated I would think lights on laptop would show that battery is charging.

I did try that already and no luck.

Taking it into shop tomorrow and I am sure they are going to tell me it needs a new motherboard.

Do you think it is worth replacing motherboard even if it costs approx. $350-500?

    Mjdent,

Sad coincidence... I had the SAME problem just an hour ago (yeah, 2 days after your first post). Have the same issues... randomly the whole thing popped and just shutdown.

No smoke... can't smell any burnt circuit. Was on surge protector. I think it just died. Did the ac / battery / cmos clear. nodda.

Can't find a replacement motherboard online yet. If you find a solution or a good shop in Canada, please let me know!

Appreciate all the other posters out there helping out. I loved this laptop. I bought a G73 6 months ago and it's sitting there... I used my gateway 7805u as the primary... sniff.

MJdent... where you sending it to? Maybe we can send two together!

I've stripped the hd's off the machine already. Hate to have to strip for parts like kboard, lcd (1900 rez screen was my fav), ram, dvd...

Let there be some Laptop Gods that smile upon our gateways.

In regards to where I am sending it I am going by a local store to see what they can do. The techguy there is a trustworthy guy so he will let me know what he thinks.

I will let you know what I find out.

cyclonecal my laptop did exactly the same as your laptop has done, no burnt smell or anything like that. My laptop also looks pristine and is in great shape.

I think the best thing to do at this point is let people look at it who really work on pc's for a living and can look at a motherboard for problems.

I am having a local store replace the motherboard. It is going to cost approx. $470.

I am sure that will solve the problem. The store told me that the motherboard is not in plentiful supply.

Im having the same problem with my P-7815u which is pretty much the same as urs. and I located where the burnt chip is that preventing my laptop from getting any power. Maybe u should try and open up ur laptop too and find where the damaged part is. If anyone can help me identify the one mosfet next to the 4407A and which way it should be soldered on the same direction or opposite if the same chip that would be much appreciated. this chip is under the black tape near the GPU fan is.

just the one right side mosfet the top square chip is okay just has glue residue but no damage.

my email is [email protected] if anyone can please help me out I will
    be very grateful.

DO NOT UNDER ANY Circumstantial BUY FROM JKCOMPUTERPARTS. I bought a motherboard from them and any time it was under a load it would freeze on me. I sent it back to have it repaired or exchanged and they tell me i sent them the wrong board. I ONLY HAVE ONE BOARD IN MY POSSESSION. I sent them the exact motherboard they sent me. Anyways.. I paid $500.00 just to have them pretty much give me a no good board and keep my money. I'll advice against that company since the customer service is completely illiterate and doesn't know a damn thing about the products they sell.

you might have to just wet it alittle with ur finger but I already got an image off a P-7811u board it looks to have the 2 of the same chips in that spot so Im just gonna replace it with another of the same 4407A chip.
