    Hi All,

Just bought myself a Gateway P7902H (arrives today) and I'm thinking about upgrading the CPU to a QX9300. Digging around the internet I've found two sources for the cpu for under $600CAD and was wondering if some of the members would mind giving me their opinion.

Shirley's CPU on EBAY has the ES (Engineering Sample) for sale at $520USD including worldwide shipping.
    LINK: Shirley on EBAY

DEC Trader has the OEM for sale for $474 which does not include shipping costs. It's also on backorder (3 to 14 days). Including shipping it will cost $540USD.

The price is not really a factor as they are close enough for me. I'm a little more concerned with the:

    1. Quality of the ES vs OEM
    2. The overclockability differences between the ES and OEM
    3. Is Shirley on EBAY legit

I'm currently leaning toward the ES only because it's available and I don't want to wait  .

Thanks in advance for any advice or thoughts you can share,
    cold-fission

P.S. If anyone needs the specs on the P7902H or benchmarks let me know.

    I would say OEM>ES.

From what I'v read on the net, it's common for the ES version to need a slighty higher voltage to be stable.
So for overclocking, I think OEM will go further.

I have seen Shirley before on ebay (while browsing for ES CPUs). Don't have any idea if it's legit.

1> 99.9999% of the time ES = OEM. Its rare for a bum ES chip to be available on the market. Intel sends these out to test in systems and it would be suicide for them to ship CPU's out that were worthless and unusable.

2> Again should be the same, but all chips will have slightly different OC capabilities, just one of the things you deal with in Electronics this small. One thing though, is no one knows for sure if the 79xx series is even capable of overclocking. Ideally you can go up to 3gHz like previous generations, but it is complete speculation and you might end up with simply a 2.53gHz quad. I dont want to talk you out of it (because as soon as they are available in the states i would love to get one of these and drop the qx9300 in it if its OCable)

3> have no idea i've never purchased from either of those sources.

Thanks for the quick responses moral hazard and kamin majere.

I will check with Gateway support to verify if the P-7902H can be overclocked. My current assumption is that it can but that is solely based on overclocking instructions being included in FX manuals for previous versions of the Laptop (P-7811FX).

Remember though that while the 7811 mentioned OC was possible, it wasnt. (or at least we had no way to prove it one way or another)
The only extreme CPU was 3.06gHz and it couldnt be OCed any higher, and the previous gen x9000 (@2.8gHz) wasnt able to be OCed in the 78xx series either.

Sorry i really dont mean to sound negative, i just want you as informed as possible. And i hope it works perfectly, because if these machines arent released soon to the states i'll be taking a road trip to canada :p

Thanks for the feedback. I'm about ready to pull the trigger so I thought I'd bump this to see if anyone else would like to comment.

My laptop arrived yesterday and I ran 3DMARK06. My P6831FX had a score of about 5300 and the new P7902H was a little over 10,000. I'm please with that result.

Not sure if the 7902H allows quad core. You may be locked out like the P78xx users. I can say if you do this you may experience no post at first. This is because the CMOS is set for just the dual core. you may have to then remove the cmos battery and laptop battery for 5 minutes to be safe and also press and hold the power button for at least 20 seconds with no batteries. Good luck, and lets us know how it works out.......

The 7902 is a native quad core unit. Its basically the upgrade to the 7808

    You saw nothing... :p

Yeah i had them backwards. Ok then scratch all of my advice about CPU's as it will more than likely not work. I was thinking you had the native quad machine.

There are offically to many models of the FX in existance now, i can no longer keep up with them. I guess its spreadsheet time

Hey guys I have the P-7803H it has a P7350 2.0Ghz its alot weaker but I was wondering if it might also support the qx9300 quad as I would really love to buy one for my PC as I find the CPU really weak.

Of the 78xx's you are relegated to C2D unless you have a native CQD system. The P-7808-u is one and I think the was another Japanese version too. Jury is out as to if the P-79xx's are of the same ilk. Since there is a new video card, and thereby a main board revision, the new boards MAY already be compatible without modification.
