I'm trying to add an HP 1012 printer to my Gateway Solo 1450 without any success. The printer works well with all my other computers and the cable I am using with the Gateway is the same cable I use successfully with another computer. I load the printer installation software and the Gateway sees and acknowledges the printer, but it won't print a test page or anything else. It's like there is a disconnect between the printer software on the computer and the USB port. Do I need to download another USB driver or am I hardware limited in the Gateway to a USB 1.0 interface?

    Thanks.

UPDATE: I re-installed the software supplied on the CD supplied with the printer. I even installed a driver from the HP web site. Same results - No printing. The computer even recognizes the printer and says that it is ready for printing.

    Any ideas?

You didn't state what OS you are using. For Win 7 do START>>DEVICES & PRINTERS and see if there is a green check mark next to the HP1012 printer. If not, right mouse and do the 'trouble shoot'.

And...isn't that laptop 10 years old?

I am using Windows XP Pro, SP3. When I go to PRINTERS, there is a check next next to this printer, although with Windows XP the check isn't green.

Yes, this machine is probably 10 years old. It also only has a USP 1.1 port, not 2.0. The HP folks didn't think that would be a problem with this printer.

You didn't state what color the check mark was. The color is important.

Did you do the right mouse trouble shoot?

In win 7 the generic printer driver worked for my really old HP printer. Did you let XP install the generic driver for your printer?

Maybe time to buy a new printer. Hey they only cost $68.00 or less. The ink refills cost more than the printers now-a-days.

Or update your computer...to a later model.

The check mark is a black dot with a white check within. That's the way it is for all the computers connected to this printer. For what's it's worth, this printer is a laser printer, not an inkjet.

I am planning on using this computer mainly as my automobile computer. I have all my OBD2 software on it as well as a 6 GB parts database. If I need to print, I can just use a jump drive.

The other five computers connected to this printer work fine.
