This is just ridiculous. I go to make a manufacturer backup with DVDs and every time it makes the first recovery disc, no problem, then when it asks for disc 2 every time I get an error code: 203 message from the console. I don't know what's up with it, I've even tried different blank DVDs, it doesn't even start to write.

I remember someone saying that you are only allowed using the Gateway Recovery once, I don't think that's the problem but just letting you know.
You can also buy the real recovery discs from the manufacturers for $20 -
at least you're able to make the first cd, i couldn't make any...also my attempt at ordering Gateway CDs failed...their site is messed up, guess they don't want my $20

I kind of doubt the first DVD will do me much good without the second. This is truly annoying because a good amount of computers already come with back-up discs without the whole burning process, you'd think if they make you burn your own it should at least work. I suppose trying to order it from Gateway may be my only option, hopefully at least that will work for me. I do wish that this would work for me considering I already purchased the blank DVDs. I also doubt that it's the one time only thing which I have also read about since it allows the burning of the first one and also it occurred my first time trying to make the back-up.

well when ordering from Gateway i clicked Finish once after ordering, waited and nothing happened, then clicked again (probably a bad idea knowing how some places like to double charge). No email confirmation at all, maybe it will just show up some day in my mailbox.

I have same issue so your not alone. I got the first perfect no issues then went through 4 disks trying to do the 2nd recovery with no luck same error. I need to contact someone but our dam warrentee stuff from tiger direct is all fugly. I have no idea who to call as I keep seeing horror stories calling gateway then directed to tiger direct which directs to someone else etc one big circle of crap. So anyone know what exactly to do in this case as I have a few other issues as well with the laptop.

Yes you only get one stab at it..mine didnt even allow me to burn the first cd before it gave me the error 205 (insert blank disc). There is a full thread on this and your only option now is to call gateway cs and have them ship you the discs...ya it is kind of bogus that when we buy these 7805's they come with no OS disc nor backup/drivers discs...
-
i failed doing that since mine is a refurb...they told me to call Revonate or whatever their name is...not sure they'd have CDs. Nice that Gateway just washes their hands completely of a refurb, pretty sure it has their name on it.
-
Omg...I haven't made my CDs yet and I have only restored from the shadow partition. Who else is not able to make the recovery CDs?
-
mine was brand new and first thing i tried to do is make backup dvds by using the gateway recovery program. i used memorex dvd+r and it doesn't do anything. code error 205...
-
Same here, brand new and not able to make restore disc....lame gateway, lame
-
even lamer is them not wanting to send a replacement cd for those who have a refurb.........oh well, upgrading to Windows 7 soon anyways hopefully it doesn't require some type of cd to pop in for doing a wipe install.

Think of the good news - you can spend more time talking to T1 "tech support" in India like I have had to with my trash 6831.
Do yourself a favor and just buy Compal -
Compal??? Oh please...

Well at least you can download the drivers you need, and I had the same issue with the restore partition. I'm not sweating it though as I have an OEM Windows Vista DVD. Their apps are pretty worthless so not much is lost.

I had the same problem. I bought a T-6859U and tried to make the start-up DVDs first thing. It hung up at 99% on the first one and gave me an error code 501. I tried a couple of times and same result. I thought some packaging was stuck in the drive and when I tried to look inside I heard a couple of pieces rattling around so I called and got a replacement. This one did the same thing with the hang up at 99% and error 501 code. I am using Verbatim DataLife DVD-R blank discs. I tried to make a back up of the OEM webcam files on using the same app and it burned 100% but failed to verify. I am thinking that Light Scribe might have something to do with this but I have not played around with it enough yet to test. Any news on this problem would be appreciated. I still hope this computer lives up to it's bang for the buck billing and I am initially okay with the fit and feel of it, once I got the replacement unfortunately, but I am concerned with support to say the least. I have called 2X to get the factory start-up discs and have been told that they are out and to call back tomorrow, at least that is what I think that "George" said. Not having good language experienced tech is a warning bell too. Hope for the best and plan for the worst.
Update: Was told to call back in 2-3 weeks as the engineering dept. needs to create media. -
