Does anyone know if Gateway would do this for an out-of-warranty machine at all?

no idea honestly. Gateway warrenty support is hit or miss.
Sometimes they are on top of the game and do quick and good work. Most of the times they are subpar at best.
As to whether or not they would extend the warrenty... not sure. I think the best thing to do would be to call them and inquire about it. I think most people either opted for the warrenty from where they bought the computer at (i.e. best buy) or skipped it entirely -
Gateway normally offers an out of warranty repair for a fee of $199 which carries a 90 day warranty.

It depends really. If you have a new CPU in and that is what they deem the issue to be, they would probably replace it with whatever came in the unit originally. Normally if there is an issue and they are unable/unwilling to repair the unit they will just refund your money and ship the unit back to you.

My GPU was busted when I got it and they replaced the entire motherboard. (It seems like MXM would be beneficial to the manufacturers also.) Maybe you can borrow the stock CPU and put it in.

Ah, I think I do still have the original, somewhere! I'll stick that back in when/if I try this. Thanks!
