I just got this Gateway laptop and did a clean install from the recovery partition. I logged into the administrator account and came across something that I never have before. I couldn't access the disk management snap-in. It said I didn't have the rights to. Is there something I don't know about gateway systems? I don't want to go and get a copy of Media Center and reinstall without all the extra software. If anyone has come across this and found a solution to it please let me know. And gateway support sucks so I don't want to go try and deal with them again. Thanks

umm you have to run as administrator
also to make it easier just turn uac off so you don't have to worry about the administrator thing

Ok, so I admit I didn't include what I was running on there. I am running Windows XP Media Center.

Did you do a factory reset? I didnt know you could do a "clean install" of windows via partition, i always thought just a factory reset.

okay you have lost me. so you erased everything on your C partition. Then did a factory reset via gateway recovery center, i.e. put your system back to the settings when it came from the factory? cause thats all the sense i can make from what your saying since you said you dont have the windows CD. if infact you did do a "factory reset", then everything in your computer should be working...unless it didnt work when it came out of the box originally.

Exactly like if they just shipped the laptop to me, yes.

Everything installed just fine. I can get on the internet and everything. Just logged into the administrator account or any other account I cannot access the disk management. And last night I found out I couldn't change the domain or workgroup also. It just seems that they put some type of group policy in the installation somewhere. I am getting a copy of the cd right now and I am just going to install a real copy of XP using the COA on the laptop. Thanks though

Media Center won't let you join a domain except in initial install, after that i is locked by MS. Only XP Pro will do that. However, it should let you change workgroups. Seems like there are multiple services not running, like Logical Disk Manager and others for some odd reason.

Check that by going to Start - Run - services.msc or right click my computer and select Computer Management(Manage) and go to services.
