Hello,
I am new to the forums and I have a question someone can hopefully answer for me. I bought a Gateway notebook from Best Buy this weekend. Here is a link to the specs on it.

It states that it has a 4200rpm hard drive in it which concerns me a little bit. But for the price the rest of the specs look very good to me. After doing a little online research I also found this on Gateway's site.

4,200-RPM-Class Performance spindle speed. Actual spindle speed is 5,400 RPM. What exactly is that supposed to mean?
Does anyone own this notebook and if so how does it perform? Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!
Mike

It means that it actually spins at 5400RPM, but it performs like a 4200RPM drive. I did have a 4200RPM drive for 3 years in my main notebook. It's not a bad thing, just booting up and loading programs takes a little longer, and if you hit swap space it can take a while. A gig or more of RAM (which you have), and it's really not a big deal if you don't mind waiting 5 more seconds for an application to read off the hard drive.

HI
I purchased my Gateway laptop MX3231 in September 2006. I love my laptop!! I have had no problems with it and I use it a lot due to on line college program I am taking.

Return it to best buy immediately and get one directly from Gateway. If there's any problem with your computer you're pretty much toast. Those Geek Squad people can't fix anything right.

A new faster hard drive is probably less than the 15% restocking fee BestBuy will charge you to return your notebook.
