Hello all. I am a new member here. I have a Gateway nv78 that I have owned for a year and a half. Just recently the laptop started shutting off after closing the lid. I have seen it shut off within a minute from being closed and I have seen it shut off after 10 minutes of being closed. When it shuts down and I restart windows tells me that it didn't shut down properly and asks if I want to start normally or go into safe mode. I have checked to make sure the laptop is set to do nothing when lid is closed. It doesnt help. I have been googling the issue but everyone says to change what the laptop is suppose to do when lid is closed. This obviously isnt the issue. In the last couple months I have replaced the hard drive and just recently the battery. The problem existed before replacing the battery. Not sure what to think here.. I did download a program to stress cpu to check for temp readings. It reached 200 degrees fahrenheit. I know this is wrong.. I bought a can of compressed air to clean fan and it doesnt help. I can hear fan run but it isnt very loud. Maybe its spinning too slow? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

I was having the same issue. For me I've narrowed down the problem to my cmos battery. Whenever I turn on ff the laptop it won't turn back on. BUT if I remove the ram, unplug the cmos, hold the power button for 40 seconds. Then plug/put everything back in. Soon as I plug in the jack,...it turns on.

So it might be that your CMOS is dying as well. That could be the cause of it.

I have a GATEWAY NV78 laptop- brand new-purchased late March- it will NOT run with AC power when the battery is attached. It will only use the battery power, until eventually the power runs out and then it will shut down and I can start it again and it will use AC power then - it won't charge the battery though, while it is on. It charges the battery while off. Gateway just sent me a new battery - but it hasn't changed anything.
