So first thanks to everyone who posts here! I get a lot of info from this forum and really appreciate it a great deal. Now on to my multiple questions...![]()
I have googled, searched this forum, and read (sometimes more than I will ever admit) on each of these subjects and, well, that may be the problem. Sometimes too much info makes it hard to make the best choice. o.0 I will be tearing my 7805u down entirely to replace the case and while I'm doing so I plan on upgrading/replacing/adding multiple things. I want to try and make the best and most informed decisions I can so that I get the best results.
1. Bluetooth - I know that the mini pcie cards don't seem to work well and really just want to get a module that can be used in the regular BT spot. That said, what is the best module to use there? I saw several that were pretty affordable and use BT 2.0. I know these will work but if anyone can suggest a chip that is newer and uses a more recent BT version (isn't version 4.0 out now?) I'd love to know! Also does anyone know the specs of the cable as I may need to buy it separately? (I know it is an eight pin something or other
)
2. I've read a lot about using the one piece gpu fan/HS from the p-79 in the p-78 to help with cooling. Can anyone who has actually done this share the results they have had? I may have missed it but I didn't seem to find out whether it was worth buying the new one? Lastly here, I read that there are two versions of the cpu HS, one short and one long - I think it said the short one was best? If this is the case does anyone have a pic or know how to tell which one is in use now? (OK I admit i didn't google for this as it just hit me)
3. TIM - If TIM were a person I'd totally smack him around! I have read the posts here, the 2011 and 2012 comparisons & round ups, manufacturer sites, and independent sites. I'm just floored by the differences in the results. Now mind you, I figured, of course manufacturers would "bend" the data/graphs to make theirs look best but have found differing results on independents too.
In the past I have used ICD7 and it worked great. That was 2 years ago so I thought there may be something better. I'd like to know if anyone has used Phobya HeGrease, Indigo Extreme, and TIM Consultants Quantum? If so do you think these would be ok for pad replacement or are they too thin? I'm considering them as well as MX-4, AS5, and ICD7. (Money isn't an issue here as I'm only doing one machine.)
I'm seriously considering a copper shim in the large gap over the cpu and would like to know thoughts on that? I know it can improve contact pressure and make thinner compounds more efficient; however, I have no idea how to tell if I have worn out the springs in the HS or if it is wise to use a shim with a thicker compound.
I'd like to know what is best so I can replace it in a couple years at the soonest. I'm probably complicating this whole TIM thing lol sorry about that!![]()
4. I was looking into buying an x9100 E0 but am also curious about the difference between the p78 & p79 MB's? What are the pro's and cons of just upgrading to the p79 MB? What newer model MB's are compatible with the p7805u fx?
If you're still reading, you are a trooper! Thanks for your input and sorry if this is all a bit redundant.
Cheers!![]()

1.) I only know of the original BT module. It is 2.0 and there may be other compatible modules but without trying them out I wouldn't recomend any specifically.
2.) The primary original P79 heatsink shoulkd get you about 5c cooler results under load. Now this can vary as the fan intensity and bios revision will have to do with that as well.
2a.) The CPU heatsink used on the q9000 versions is the short leg one. This thread may help.

3.) To replace the pad you could use a 0.5mm thick copper shim and thin paste or ICD. Rememeber a thin tim will eventually bake out. This is the one advantage to ICD, I have had it installed over 1 year and there was 0 bakeout issues.
4.) the P79 does two things for you. first is the 260m over the 9800m GTS. Second is better power to the CPU. You actually have to undervolt further to overclock. The bad side is less power available to the USB ports so this will cause issues with high poll rate devices. -

Thanks for the info TAN. I'm curious if youre still using the Tuniq TX-4 you mentioned trying out a couple months ago? I'm just curious really. I went ahead and ordered some ICD to just get things moving.
That heat sink thread you recommended was great. the problem I'm having with finding a HS is that a lot of sellers seem to just be using stock pictures with random part numbers thrown in. I'm digging back through threads looking for part numbers of the short leg cpu HS so I can make sure I don't get sent one that I already have. You seem to know the forum inside and out so if you have any other threads to share... -
I believe the acual part numbers are different on the CPU coolers................

A02 for the cpu hs and 60.4FE04.001 for the gpu fan/hs). I contacted the sellers to confirm they will send those numbers (yes I am that anal) so now we shall see what comes.

Same here, you have to be specific for the better parts..............

Yeah I noticed sellers seemed to have the "if it'll fit it works the same" idea with some parts. Heck I honestly didn't realize how much different small changes or changes that you can't really see would effect a HS. Call me a noob but a little light bulb turned on last week when I read that theres fluid in them. I never looked into notebook ones before and always assumed they were just solid tubes. LOL Yes it is scary that I will be playing in the guts of my notebook soon.

do not feel too bad, many here have been at this for a long time and have no life, myself especially............................

Oh I don't feel bad I figure there are way worse and certainly more boring things I could be doing with my time. And hey if you didn't spend so much time here we'd have a lot of upset laptop owners!
So let me throw an idea I have for a mod to the MB. As far as I can tell the main difference between the mini card full length slot (that has the wireless card) and the mini card half length slot (mine is currently empty) is the placement of the posts for screwing down the card itself. So I have a 32gb card laying around that would fit if there was a way to keep it bolted down. I'm considering finding a way to either trim down the posts or put holes in the sides of the card or whatever, just some way to keep the card in place and secure. I have the broken MB from my other 7805 that I could "practice" on and I'm sure there's a fairly simple solution.
So hypothetically speaking if the card were in place and secure could that drive be used as the boot drive (Running Win7 Ultimate) on the notebook? I know a 2.5" SSD would be best but prices are still pretty high for them. Besides I have this card going to waste! -
I am not sure msata cads would work but there are older non msata cards that probably would work..................
Gateway p-7805u Need help narrowing the "best choices" for bluetooth, HS, TIM
