Take reseller ratings with a pinch of salt. They aren't the most reliable of sources. As Greg mentioned, people love to complain. Why is it that most of the posts in the "brand" forums tend to be complaining or asking for help about one thing or another? It's precisely because of the fact that people who have no problems or issues generally won't turn up to say that "the company was great, fabulous service and etc."

I'm a subscriber to Consumer Reports online. When I was shopping for a laptop, I initially didn't look at Gateway because of their reputation as a 2nd tier manufacture where quality is concerned. But I was surprised when I looked at Consumer Reports latest laptop report

Of laptops purchased between 2003 - 2007, what % has had major repairs or problems: (so laptops 1-5 years old)

    #1 - Lenovo/IBM 20%
    #2 - Compaq 20%
    #3 - Sony 21%
    #4 - Toshiba 21%
    #5 - Dell 22%
    #6 - HP 22%
#7 - Gateway 22% (so basically the same as the Dell & HP)
    #8 - Apple 23%

Everyone says Apple's just work... well not according to the research done by Consumer Reports. lol

So Gateway is near the bottom of the top 8, but practically the same as Dell & HP, and not far behind Sony & Toshiba. The difference wasn't big enough for me to say, "I'm not going to look at Gateway." In fact, once I included Gateway in my options, it didn't take me long to settle in on the P-6860FX. I saw it about 3 weeks ago for the 1st time and bought it yesterday when it went on sale ($1249).

Thx for posting those stats mike! i searched for them but then ran into a "subscribe" screen #$^%^$%^

also, the reason apples % might be a little skewed is that a big percent of Apple's market share are students.
