    Gateway NV55C49U PER91
    Some manner of I3
    3 G SODIMM (HUH?)
    New 320 HD
    Win7 64 and so on....

    Whoops.... That'll teach me!
I replaced the HD in a Gateway nv55cy9u laptop.
Everything went fine. I installed the OS drivers & some apps. Most of what I wanted.
At a Glance, all was well with the Laptop.

As a final touch I decided to UPDATE TO the latest BIOS.

I used the MFR windows update file. (ver. 1.30) That started the problems

Now the confounded thing displays the win7 opening screen then BSOD's.

    Then:
I burned the DOS files to a bootable stick.

The Laptop now loads the current BIOS ver.(1.30) with the same results (BSOD after opening windoz screen).

I could go with a fresh OS install but I have a feeling that would be a big waste of time.

It will not let me go back to a previous bios ver.....

    Help ME Obi-Wan!!!!

    How screwed am I?

If it gets to Windows loading screen it means the BIOS update worked fine. Try reinstalling the OS once more.

It may be a bios setting. Usually this is the ACHI setting. Go to bios load defaults and let it boot. if there is a BSOD go to bios and swap the ACHI/IDE to the opposite setting. I fthis doesn't help a new OS install may be in order without knowing what the BSOD is.............

Was that the BIOS from gateway site when you inputted your serial number to get the right BIOS update? And have you tried to remove the laptop battery and CMOS battery to see if it will reset? Sometimes if you can do these last two discharges that will set it to default and you can go back into the BIOS IMO. Then go to BIOS settings to change the BIOS settings and set to ACHI for the hard drive. But it also sounds like your install was not properly installed as well.
