So, I wasn't seeing SP1 from the windows update, so I emailed tech support asking if I should be seeing SP1 or not from windows update.
I figured they should know right?

This is the answer I got:

    Hello XXXX,

Thank you for your e-mail. Any Service Pack is not offered via Windows
Updates. It is not recommended to update to SP1 since your computer is
working fine. If you update to SP1 then we will not be able to support
you. If you encounter any problems from the day you updated to SP1, then
you must contact Microsoft for it.

    no support for SP1 ?
    can they do that ???
    They nuts ?

also, as I understand it, in the non-corporate world, SP1 is only available from windows update for the consumer and is Microsoft's recommended method of install.

AND I am still not sure if its supposed to show up in windows update!

So anyone with a 6831fx, Did it show up for you, or did you download the stand alone ?

Yes I have downloaded the Vista SP1 via windows update on all 3 of my laptops.I do not have any complaints or problems up to this point all 3 computers are working very well with the SP1 update. As far as Gateway not supporting SP1 I would imagine that they could do that because it did not ship to us with SP1 granted it was not released (finalized I should say) yet. I would expect that any new PC's being manufactured that has Vista pre-installed should and will come with Vista SP1 installed on them as well. But I don't know.

I am sure when Sp1 updates with the auto update in a month or too, they can not say too much. Tech support always "error" on the side of caution. Sp1 has be a big improvement for me, I can know play Everquest 2 and not crash do to memory issues. I think SP1 does a way better job with memory managment.

I got it from auto update. Not problems. Gateway's gonna have to support it eventually, especially since the quoted reason for not supporting it is bullcrap.

Did you all miss the gagillion threads on this already?

If SP1 doesn't show up in Windows Update, it means that your system has a driver that is not compatible with SP1. This means it is better for you to wait a while rather than download it through the stand-alone pack. This does not mean that you cannot download it through the stand-alone pack if you really wanted to.

The tech was 100% correct. I'm surprised all of you missed this very publicized fact.

I bought my 6831FX last night because updating to SP1 blew up my desktop. I can't even re-install Vista correctly.

I wouldn't touch SP1 if you paid me.

I have updated 3 computers at home with SP1, I doubt SP1 had anything to do with your problem, you might have some driver issues, but a complete system crash there is probubly something else that happened.

Probably was a driver issue. SP1 came up in my Windows Update just before on my 6831, so is safe to say that it's safe to update? When I did my desktop it didn't come up in Windows Update, I downloaded straight from microsoft.com.

I don't know if anyone has said this, mainly because I'm too lazy to read, but the update solved a ton of problems for me. Just in the last few days....

    1. Command and conquer decades finally works with no problems. All of the games like sims 4 and a few others that didn't work, now do.

    2. I can see a big difference with how CS3 runs on my machine. before, when I'd open ps, dw, fw and il it'd get a bit laggy. For whatever reason, it runs 100 times better now. Doesn't make sense, but it does.

    3. my hard drive is reading actual space now. before the install I had 100 gb free, and after 142gb free.

    4. its booting a little fast, not much, but enough.

Thats just what I've noticed. I don't really care if gateway doesn't support it, its been great on my system.

I have noticed these points too my system boots a little faster and F.E.A.R as well as Bioshock plays awesome and I noticed that Bioshock plays a lot smoother and it has not crashed as it did in the past so I have to agree with the points that armyofchad made in his post because I have noticed this as well.I have updated all 3 of my laptops at home and I have not experienced any problems I updated all of them through Windows Update.

I want to update to reap the benefits, but I am very reluctant to do so.

When I downloaded the update(from microsoft.com, not through Windows Update) and tried to update on my desktop, complete crash and still haven't gotten it back running. Screwed up my entire computer.

However, the update does show up in my Windows Update on my 6831FX, which leads me to believe there isn't any driver issues and I won't have a problem updating.

To all those experts out there, should I try it? I guess if worse comes to worse, I can return the laptop to Best Buy for a replacement, still within the 14 day period.

My FX is 3 days old as off right now and have been running non stop 24X7 (more like 3 right now) and I received the SP1 update automatically.

Had no issues so far....can run both CoD4 and Crysis at the native res with med settings.

Mine's been running for about 3 weeks on SP1, I had the "early release" version. No issues so far, and it did fix the "slow file transfer" issue I was having up until that point. When I would move data from my local drive to my network drive, it was excruciatingly painful. Everything normal after the update.
