That's the story with all of Asus' products that go to Best Buy. They all have good components but aren't utilized well at all.

Its because while the Asus componets are high end gear, they tend to skimp on cooling for some weird reason.

I would gladly take gateways crappy mic and web cam and a lower res screen, so long as i know my computer wont spontaneously catch on fire because all my componets are being cooled by a single fan. :p

Well, I just ordered my P-7908u from newegg, so I might be able to contribute something since I got that one instead of the 7915u from Best Buy.

Keith, can you confirm once and for all whether or not it has an LED backlit screen? Frys website says it does. Some overall impressions would be nice too.

Im curious also about the 3 hours of battery life thats advertised in some places.. I dont remember my 6860 or 7811 ever getting more then about 1:45 min max but its been awhile so it may have been abit longer...

How would I go about getting that info? If I were to supply the Hardware ID for the display, would that help?

My first and only impression is this: I did a quick run of 3D Mark 06 with the GPU clocks at 600/900/1500. On the Asus G60 that I have here, the GPU maxed out at 90c at those clocks. The 7908 maxed out at 71c. That made me VERY happy. The temps were read by the latest version of HW Monitor. The 7908 GPU also idles at 41c. That is with Powermizer working with the 186.62's. I didn't have to use the Powermizer utility that's floating around either. It defaults to the low 2D clocks on its own.

Other than that, it is just like the 7805u that I had once upon a time in just about every way. Minus the logo change on the case and the fact that it came with Windows 7.

If you go into device manager under monitors/generic monitor/details then in the drop down there is a Hardware ID it should say what model it is..

I think if it were LED it would also indicate it somewhere on the box as well..

Hardware ID for the display is LPLA103. The box says: 17" WXGA+ LCD

My guess would be that it's not a LED display. I think it's the same one that was used in the 7805.

Yeah if it were LED it would have been printed somewhere on the box because thats a feature they would want to show off..

Oh well still a nice machine and replacing the screens in those machines to something better(if your not happy) is a no brainer :)..

Thank you so much Keith! Those temps make me very happy too. I can't afford to have a laptop die after a year or two. Thanks for the info on the screen; kind of a bummer but expected. Does that mean you can sue Frys for false advertising? ;)

It's funny that you say that. When I had my 7805, it was the 1920x1200. The first one that I had was the 1440x900 and I hated it. I HAD to have the 1920 screen. So I took it back and was able to get one with the 1920 screen. I got rid of my 7805 back in April. I picked up a Asus G60 a week ago. My first laptop since then. The G60 has the 1366x768 screen. I kind of got used to it seeing as I haven't had my 7805 for awhile now. I forgot what a 1920 screen looks like.

With the 7908, even though it's not 1920, I think I'm happy with the 1440. At least at the moment. ;)

I can still get right at 3 hours with my 6860. It was about 2:30 in Vista and it probably increased 10-15 minutes once i installed win7. So yeah thats pretty easily doable (i havent used my new battery yet so it might be even over 3 hours that way)

I am curious how they got 3 hours with the 260GTX though, that card uses alot more power than the 8800GTS/9800GTS. Maybe the BIOS have a pretty agressive powermizer strategy

Atleast you realized that in a gaming notebook, performance is key. I love how all the 1920 lovers claim they have to have it. All it does is shrinks everything down to tiny pixels and degrades gaming performance.

    On a 17" notebook, 1440 is perfect.

90% of 22" LCD uses 1680x1050, so why would anyone want 1920x1200 on a tiny 17" LCD is beyond me.

Well the 1920x1200 screen is alot more productive if you have to preform any work on the computer. I wouldnt work at anything less than 1920x1200 due to it saves me scrolling and i can fit more than 1 full document per screen.

But i have never found 1440x900 a bad resolution. It makes gaming great because you can usually turn up every last bit of eye candy to about max and still enjoy good frames per second in games.

Precisely what I love about my screen =D

If I had a screen that was 1900x1280, there is no way I would be able to play some of these graphically-demanding games (Mass Effect, Crysis, etc) with the settings that I enjoy them at.

When you hook it up to a 1080p 50" Plasma TV...thats when you want the 1920x1200 ;). That is exactly why I wanted it, plus the HDMI port.

I'm waiting for something big to come out of gateway in a year or 2 before I upgrade any further. None of these 7908's and 7915's can touch my P7811 w/x9100 processor and my 8gb ram. all of these stock CPU's don't push the vid cards enough...when you go up in cpu then you really get the potential out

    was it hte 7908ufx?

its' almost identical, except our 7811 has 1920x1280 and the gpu is a 260m vs. our 9800m gts.

those gpu's are very similary, by the way. fill rates, gpu clock speed, processor clock speed, all almost identical. the 9800m actually has a better fill rate and gpu processor clock

They only do it right when they make mistakes, like they did with my p7805u giving me a WUXGA LG screen instead of a regular WXGA. I'm pretty happy they made that mistake ^^
