    New gateway user/forum user here.

I recently got a refurbished Gateway M680. Configured with:

    Pentium M 2.0ghz (760)
    ATI X700 128mb

Overall, I am VERY satisified with the laptop :)

After playing a 3d game like WoW for 20 minutes, the CPU temps go to about 81c. Idle temps are good at about 40-45c. I am using Notebook Hardware Control to monitor/control the CPU. I also used NHC to tweak the voltage down a bit.

Is this normal? The temp doesn't seem to go above above 81c, is this acceptable? This is only while the CPU is set to MAX. Should I crack her open and put some artic silver on? What kinda drop are we talking here?

    Congratualtions on your purchase :)
I don't know proper gaming temperatures. 80C seems high for anything. 40-45C on the other hand is decent at idle. Nothing to worry about there.
If you know what you are doing, I'd say put some Arctic Silver on anyways. I'm not sure on how much it will help, but it has to do some good, right?

    Thanks for the response.

Yeah, I think I will crack it open and slap some artic silver there.

Are there any utilities to control the fan speed? I tried speedfan but it doesn't recognize the fan controller.

Well for notebooks it is very hard to find a fan controller. You can check your BIOS, or else you can use Notebook Hardware Control. But you have to program your own controller there, pretty hard.

80 C is high. Check the fan and the heat outlet, and make sure theres no dust or any contaminents. You can put arctic silver on, but make sure you know what you are doing, and check with the warrenty, because it may void it.

Does anyone out there have a similar setup? I am curious to see what is typical.

I have the 2.13GHz + 6800. It used to idle at 60C-70C. I replaced the thermal compound with AS5 and it went downa few degrees and a help from NHC with undervolting the CPU rendered the same difference in degrees dropped.

Also, I may suggest a laptop stand that will elevate the back ot the computer to give it more room for air to move. Currently, it's idling at 47C and at full load, it's 58-60C.

Well putting Artic Silver on helped out ALOT.

I took off the existing heatsink compound and a small tin or aluminum sheet between the CPU and the compound!

My Load temps are now under 70c with Full 3d. Sweet!

Still kinda too high for an X700 machine.
