My p7801u has an average temperature of around 50 degrees Celsius, is this normal? I just got it two days ago too.

Odd seems kinda high mine idles at 32c, when gaming it reaches 38c.
Probably not normal but do you hear any odd sounds when it reaches does temps. Like metal being hit against one another very lightly? -
Idle temperatures are varied in most notebooks. The reasoning behind this is due to their different thermal designs and low-level programming for fans.
Danger zone (high) temperatures are pretty standard due to manufactures low-level specifications of usage. Danger temps are set to downclock the component such as the CPU or GPU in order to cool the component down enough to prevent overheating
Here are temperatures for specific components when they enter the danger zone.:
CPU danger temperature is around 70C
GPU danger temperature is around 90-95C
HDD danger temperature is around 60-65C
Threshold temperatures are also pretty standard once again due to the reasons specified under the danger zone temperatures. These temperatures are the most dangerous to a system, in which permanent hardware damage can be incurred if the user does not remedy the heat issue during which time the user is experiencing temperatures within the danger zone. Systems that have a component that reaches threshold temperatures will usually crash or shutdown when the temperature peaks.
CPU threshold temperature is around 90-100C
GPU threshold temperature is around 100-105C
HDD threshold temperature is varied, but above 65C is bad
Safe temperatures are temperatures are basically any temperature below the danger zone temperatures. Even a 5C-10C difference is ok as long as it stays below the danger zone temperatures.

Yeah it's very strange. I wouldn't have noticed it if it wasn't for the heat i feel under my right palm. The rest of my computer (cpu, gpu) is very cool but the HDD is burning up even if I'm just surfing the internet. I leave it on my desk and it's well ventilated. Does anyone else have a temp like mine?

its normal temp for 78xx series laptopsonsider the way hard drive compartment is designed , my gateway p7811fx reaches over 65c+ while playing games.

What temperature are you measuring at 50C? data from a sensor, or directly from the bottom of your PC. You might try using a utility to change the acoustic management setting on the drive/drives to 128 so that its "quieter" and also producing less heat.
-
Is that with the stock HDD? Do you have two in RAID0?
-
My two scorpio black 320's at 7200RPM are at 45 and 43 degrees right now, running RAID0.
-
My HDD runs about the same temp too. No raid config, just a single HDD.

I understand I'm reviving an old thread, but its for a good cause.
My Gateway P7805u's WD3200BEKT 7200rpm hard drive is running at an average of 50-54 degrees, and the palm rest is quite warm. Can I suspect a problem with the hard drive? I have the laptop elevated about an inch with all vents unobstructed.
The temps were measured with CPUID Hardware Monitor.(HW Monitor) -
hard drives at those speed have a tendency to run hot....not really sure how hot. also depending on your ambient temps as well can affect your HD temps
-
Apparently that's still a safe range for the HD, but I don't like that heat percolating up into my laptop - can't be a good thing for any components.
I've switched to an OCZ Vertex SSD which stays around 27-30c and is much faster once you get it tweaked up, so the heat problem is going away very soon. -

Yeah, I said before that my HDD is averaging 50 C before, but now that summer has kicked in the average temp is 54 C now. But w/e, nothin you can do about it.
