There is a setting in audio properties that you need to switch, making the hdmi (digital) the default audio source.

You may have to set HDMI to default then reboot your computer as well. This is what I had to do before the HDMI audio out took effect

I set my audio on the fly, I had it hooked up to my 50" Plasma, went into Audio settings, and changed in from the defualt to Digital output. Use the IDT audio controll in the control panel. Digital audio output, its the thrid tab over.

The easy way to setup HDMI
right click on speaker icon in right corner
    click on sounds
    click on playack tab
click on Digital Output Device (HDMI Out)
    click on set as default
    done
When finished switch back to speakers

Make sure you don't have any apps open when you do this. The audio system can send output to all three devices at once (speakers, hdmi, sp/dif) at once.

i.e. if you switch to hdmi while firefox is open, any app you open will output to hdmi but firefox (youtube etc.) will output to speakers.

A restart is probably a good idea.
