 I purchased the Gateway M-7315u in February this year and I have been using a HDMI cable to connect my laptop to my TV simply by plugging in the cable that is connected to the TV. No or steps were needed. Now for whatever reason to get my movies from my laptop to appear on the TV I now have to connect by turning off my laptop, then plug in the cable, then turn on the laptop, change the audio speaker to HDMI. Does anyone have any idea as to what has happened to alter the way it now connects?

have you updated your video card driver recently because thats what controls the hdmi dual screen part of the laptop. you can access this by right clicking on your desktop and laft clicking on the nvidia control panel. from there go to set up multiple displays. here you should be able to activate the hdmi if it shows no picture when you plug it in with the laptop on. i think from your description that the driver simply just isnt auto activating the hdmi port when you plug it in anymore. this could be due to several reasons hard to say. also the reason it works when you turn it on with it plugged in is because the computer detects that something is plugged in and passes that info along to the driver at startup. when you plug the hdmi with the comp on. the comp detects its plugged in but in order to not interrupt you it awaits you to throw the manual "switch" letting it know its ok to work.

if im wrong then it is most likely just corruption of data which i think a simple driver erase and re install will fix. if not then its probably the os.

he's basically saying that he USED to be able to simply plug the cable in, and the desktop would transfer over to the TV as well as the sound. but NOW he plugs in the cable, and nothing happens, so he has to reboot and then right click the speaker in the lower right and set playback devices to hdmi.

this is a driver issue. some drivers autodetect the hdmi cable, and some don't. I would suggest upgrading to the newest drivers (see the definitive nvidia driver sticky thread), and find one that auto-detects your hdmi.

Thank you, thank you! It was the driver. It is working as it originally did. You did what Gateway's techs did not do. You solved my problem.
